Instagram appears to be encountering an app crashing issue which makes it impossible for affected users to access the popular social media service on their devices. At the moment, it remains to be seen what is causing the issue, or when it is likely to be fixed.

Like many services, Instagram is not without its problems and the service often experiences issues which directly impact on the user experience. For example, a problem with the app in May resulted in the feed being unable to load, among other issues. As Instagram is owned by Meta, along with Facebook and WhatsApp, it’s also not uncommon for a problem to affect more than one, or even all three, services at the same time.

Today, a number of Instagram users have been taking to Twitter and elsewhere to confirm an issue with the app. Screen Rant has also seen the issue in effect as well. Essentially, when the Instagram app is opened, it immediately closes again. On some occasions, an operating system warning message is displayed advising of the crash. In other instances, the app simply closes and returns to the device’s home screen. Either way, affected users are finding it impossible to actually use Instagram or any of its features.

Still Unclear Why Instagram Is Crashing

When issues like this arise it is not uncommon for the companies involved to post on social media or on their status pages to confirm that there is an issue. These messages normally also come with additional information such as the problem is being investigated. However, Instagram and Meta do not appear to have posted any similar messages yet, making it much harder to understand what’s going on. Due to this, it not only remains to be seen what is causing the problem, but also how long it might take to be fixed. Of course, this may change soon if and with an update is provided or if the problem is quickly fixed.

For those experiencing the problem in the meantime, they are far from the only ones with a number of people having now lodged similar complaints on Down Detector. Considering the fairly widespread nature of the problem, it remains unclear as to whether any workarounds will work for everyone. However, one option that has been suggested is to clear the cache for the app in the device’s settings menu. If that doesn’t work, it may just be a matter of waiting until Instagram fixes the crashing app issue.
