Certain types of content aren't permitted on Instagram, and repeatedly trying to post them may lead to a user's entries or account being taken down. When someone in the Instagram community reports a photo or video — usually a follower of the account behind the post — it is analyzed by a team of reviewers for inappropriate content. This ensures that Instagram is a safe environment for users from different walks of life.

Instagram users are afforded a lot of control over their feeds, so they only see content relevant to their tastes and preferences. They can easily unfollow accounts they no longer want to keep track of. They can also report posts or Instagram profiles they find offensive or unsuitable for the platform.

Instagram users who've uploaded entries that others have flagged can find out which post is under review through their account status on the app. To get there, launch the Instagram app — users cannot do this on the desktop, unfortunately — and tap on the profile photo in the page's bottom-right corner. Next, hit 'Menu' (three-line icon) in the top-right corner, then select 'Settings.' Next, go to 'Account' and press 'Account Status.'

Instagram's Community Guidelines Violation: The Review Process

Instagram App Account Status pages

Within Instagram's 'Account Status' page, users can view any post, story, or comment they posted that was anonymously reported by someone for violating community guidelines. If Instagram removed the content, they could find out the reason behind Instagram's decision. It could be for several reasons, including hate speech, spam or scams, graphic violence or credible threats of harm, harassment or bullying, the gratification of self-harm or eating disorders, or nudity, to name some. Reported Instagram users can also check 'Account Status' to quickly access and review the community guidelines for added insight into what could have possibly led to their post's removal or account suspension.

Instagram's report feature is primarily community-based. Because of this, it's also highly possible that flagged posts and profiles do not warrant content removal, especially from the user's perspective. If a user's post was deleted for a community guideline violation or is experiencing a disruption to their account access, they can contest the decision and request a review on the app.

Continually posting previously removed Instagram content deemed against community standards may lead to being locked out of the platform. When this happens, users may lose access to all the photos, videos and highlights they've posted through their account. Although users are not given a heads-up when content is initially taken down, in most instances, if there is no detected risk to the community associated with the post in question, Instagram users will be issued a warning before access to their personal account is completely removed.
