Since 2009, Blumhouse Productions has been dominating the horror scene in recent years with microbudget films that are heavily marketed and end up grossing many, many times their production costs at the box office. Among these films are a handful of horror franchises, of which Paranormal Activity is the most prolific - followed by James Wan and Leigh Whannell's Insidious films.
The premise of Insidious was a gentle but neat twist on the genre: a family moves into a new house and after their son falls into a strange coma and they start seeing ghosts around the house, they believe that their new home is haunted. It then transpires that it's actually their son who is haunted due to an inherited gift/curse, making it impossible to escape the ghosts by simply leaving the house. Upcoming threequel Insidious: Chapter 3 focuses on a new family: a recently bereaved father and daughter, the latter of whom finds herself targeted by malevolent spirits after trying to contact her dead mother.
A new clip from Insidious: Chapter 3 debuted at WonderCon 2015 over the weekend and has since found its way online. In it, young Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) has a session with the series' resident medium Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), who attempts to reach Quinn's mother but soon finds herself being frightened off by another spirit. According to /Film, another clip was shown that revealed the evil spirit (or one of them, at least) to be called "The Man Who Can't Breathe" - a manifestation of cancer.
The report describes a scene in which Quinn, who is confined to a wheelchair after a traffic accident, attempts to escape from The Man Who Can't Breathe but finds herself being wheeled about helplessly by him and then accosted by a hideous version of herself that has no hands, feet, eyes or mouth. The trailers have suggested that Quinn ends up getting possessed by one of the spirits, so perhaps the clip was a precursor to that.
A new poster for Insidious: Chapter 3, featuring Scott and her co-star Dermot Mulroney, has also been released, and it comes with quite an ominous tagline.
