Lin Shaye thinks Insidious 5 hasn't happened yet because real life is scarier than anything fictional. Shaye starred in all four films in the franchise since the first movie came out in 2011. She starred as paranormal investigator Elise, having a minor role in the first film. Her role in the franchise grew over time, with the fourth and most recent story focusing on her character, despite her death in the first film.

Created by James Wan (the Saw franchise) and Leigh Wannell (The Invisible Man), the Insidious franchise was highly successful. All four films have grossed $539 million worldwide on a cumulative budget of just $26.5 million. Talks of a fifth Insidious film have been going on for a while, with horror producer Jason Blum. There were even hints that an Insidious crossover with horror series Sinister could provide material for a new film.

While discussing her new movie with Coming Soon, though, Shaye said that Insidious 5 hadn't happened yet because the horror of the franchise just can't compete with the real-world horrors that are happening right now.

I think everybody is so preoccupied with the horror of our own society, we’re in a horror film right now of sorts. There was some thought at one point that James had about another Insidious, but I’ve heard nothing. I think everybody’s preoccupied. I’m good with whatever, if we come back, I’m in The Further this time, so that will be different.

While the franchise has yet to get out of the development stage, Shaye is not wrong when she says everybody involved is preoccupied. Wan has been busy directing Aquaman for the DCEU and continuing his work with The Conjuring franchise. Whannell experienced his stardom, turning out the critically acclaimed The Invisible Man earlier this year and working its sequel, as well as a new iteration of The Wolfman.

Shaye has become somewhat of a horror icon since her starring turn in the Insidious films. Despite having a long and storied career that began in 1975, Shaye faced a revival of sorts that saw her feature in other horror movies since Insidious. She's since starred in the Ouija films and the most recent revival of The Grudge. She's also set to star in the upcoming movie The Call with fellow horror icon Tobin Bell.

However, if the franchise were to return, Shaye's role would be a little bit different. Having been killed off in the first film, Shaye's character Elise has only featured prominently in prequels. If the writers were to bring her back, they would have to figure out how to integrate her ghost in The Further into a larger role. However they choose to bring her in, it's clear that Shaye's character is an integral part of the franchise. Working around her death and bringing back Elise for a fifth entry in the franchise would be a sure-fire way to ensure the surviving legacy of the Insidious series.
