Is video game sequel Injustice 3 going to happen? NetherRealms is run by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, with the studio being largely focused on producing Mortal Kombat games. Beginning with 2011's soft reboot Mortal Kombat, the most recent entries have really cranked up the franchise's trademark bloodshed while giving players a large roster of characters to choose from. This includes adding famous guests such as A Nightmare On Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, The Terminator and the Predator.
While Mortal Kombat remains their flagship series, they're also behind the Injustice franchise. The first game was 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us, which featured an alternate version of Superman becoming the ultimate villain after he kills The Joker in revenge for the death of Lois Lane and Metropolis being destroyed by a nuclear bomb. The game featured any number of iconic DC heroes and villains facing off, from Batman to Wonder Woman, Aquaman and even Doomsday. Injustice 2 followed in 2017, adding more playable heroes and villains such as Supergirl and it quickly became a best-seller.
Injustice is now a full-blown franchise but what's the current status of Injustice 3?
Injustice 3 Hasn't Been Announced Yet
Despite the success of the previous titles, Injustice 3 has yet to be officially announced. That said, it's really a question of when the sequel is confirmed, not if, and as NetherRealms tend to cycle back and forth between Injustice and Mortal Kombat games, a third entry is likely their next project.
Rumors Suggest Injustice 3 Will Arrive In 2021 For Next-Gen Consoles
There's been no end of speculation and alleged leaks about when Injustice 3 will arrive, with 2021 being commonly cited as the release date. Given the impending arrival of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it's almost a certainty the next installment will arrive on those platforms over current-gen consoles.
The Matrix's Neo Might Be Joining Injustice 3
One of the most exciting additions to any new Injustice game is the new fighters, with Injustice 3 reported to feature the likes of The Matrix's Neo, The Penguin and John Constantine. Neo would be a particularly fun addition, and this rumor is given credence by Ed Boon once revealing there were talks to include the character in Injustice 2 that fell through.
Given the upcoming arrival of The Matrix 4, this feels like a strong possibility - it would also be fun to have an alternate, Keanu Reeves skin if Constantine is added too. That said, other reports stating the like of Joaquin Pheonix's Joker could appear in Injustice 3 feel patently unlikely, and its best to treat all rumors about the game with a healthy dose of salt for now.
