Injustice: Gods Among Us was a successful game by many standards. Sales notwithstanding, the game was well reviewed and spawned a popular comic series featuring one of DC's ever-so-prevalent alternate universes. In this iteration, the Joker drives Superman to establish a One World Order, which Batman resists. Outmatched alone, he begins pulling heroes from the mainstream DC universe. A fighting game ensues.
Naturally, success equals sequel, and Injustice 2 is well on its way towards its 2017 release. This iteration looks to include new exciting characters like Gorilla Grodd and Supergirl, and features an armor leveling mechanic that will boost your DC avatar from hero to even superior hero.
Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise and director of Injustice 2 recently tweeted that two new heroes would be revealed at the game's Comic-Con panel. Low and behold, a new gameplay trailer (see above) has been released by WB Games, showing off the fighting styles of Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle.
Wonder Woman is certainly not a surprising addition to the roster. Gal Gadot's extended cameo of the character was regarded by many as the highlight of this year's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. It would also simply be odd to exclude a member of the "DC Trinity" from a game boasting its primary heroes. Her character seems to play similarly to the original game, with separate "lasso" and "sword and shield" stances.
Blue Beetle's appearance is the biggest treat for DC comic fans. The slightly lesser-known hero with a mystical scarab of alien origin was one of Screen Rant's top picks for inclusion in the Injustice sequel. The only question now is how the game is going to fit in the nearly infinite weapons and fighting styles Blue Beetle is able to manifest. He certainly looks like he's off to a good start, considering the crazy attacks he's throwing Diana's way in the trailer.
Since Wonder Woman seemed like such a shoo-in, fans hoping for two unexpected new reveals may feel a bit disappointed. But Blue Beetle is nothing to shrug at, and with the game still quite a ways off, many more heroes and villains are sure to be in store in the coming months.
