Fans of DC Comics have a lot to look forward to in 2017. Rebirth comics are going strong, the DC CWverse could be growing even bigger, Wonder Woman and Justice League will both hit the big screen, and Injustice 2 - ranked 13th on Screen Rant’s list of most anticipated games of 2017 -  will be launching with Netherrealm Studios promising the biggest roster of characters ever available in a fighting game.

Injustice 2 is a sequel to 2013’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, which was cited as the best fighting game of 2013 by multiple outlets. The game’s Mortal Kombat-style action and large selection of classic DC characters made it a hit with fighting game enthusiasts and DC Comics fans alike.

The story of Injustice: Gods Among Us takes place in an alternate reality where the Joker gasses Superman, causing him to hallucinate, believing that a pregnant Lois Lane is actually Doomsday. He accidentally kills Lois and her unborn baby, triggering a sensor linked to Lois’s heart that detonates a bomb in the center of Metropolis, destroying the city. The events cause Superman to establish a new world order in an attempt to ensure justice, forcing Batman to retrieve Justice League members from an alternate universe to combat Superman’s regime.

It’s not clear yet exactly where Injustice 2's story picks up, but a few teases from the official Twitter accounts of Injustice 2 and DC Comics (see below) suggest that a new story trailer is on the way, promising a reveal next week on January 17th.

A couple additional tweets from Xbox and PlayStation also offer additional glimpses. Each tweet only shows a brief snippet of the presumed trailer, but the phrase “the lines are redrawn” and a shot of Supergirl fighting Wonder Woman suggests yet another scenario that will pit superhero against superhero, as shown in the Injustice 2 announcement trailer.

While the story is an exciting aspect of the game, Injustice 2 is still a fighting game, and it’s promising a massive stable of characters. Needless to say, most of the hype is centered around these new character reveals, and there are a lot of possibilities. Ed Boone even teased the presence of Watchmen characters in a Twitter poll in November. Not all of them will be available at launch though, as some of the previously-teased characters, such as Spawn and Sub-Zero, are expected to be made available as DLC.

Injustice 2 launches on May 16th, 2017.
