Injustice: Gods Among Us was an incredibly popular fighting video game, based on the fictional comic book superheroes and villains from the DC Universe and developed by NetherRealm Studios – the studio also behind the recent Mortal Kombat entries. This year, the studio will release their follow-up to the critically-acclaimed and hugely commercially successful title in the form of Injustice 2. Ed Boon returns as director on the game, while Adam Urbano is producing.

Whilst little bits of information about the Injustice sequel have been released throughout the past few months, gamers have had to wait to get a glimpse of the kind of story they should expect when Injustice 2 hits shelves. That is, until now, with publishers Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment revealing an exciting new showcase of the gameplay coming to DC fans later this year.

Dark and gloomy throughout, the Injustice 2 story trailer promises the evolution of alliances, breaking of friendships and blurring of factions. As new lines are drawn in the sand, those who have worked together in the past to overcome their enemies are now forced to go up against one another, in some of the biggest battles the DC Universe has ever seen. The previously-released official synopsis for the game reads:

“Injustice 2 is NetherRealm Studios’ super-powered sequel to the hit game Injustice: Gods Among Us that allows players to build and power up the ultimate version of their favorite DC characters. Featuring a massive selection of DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains, Injustice 2 continues the epic cinematic story introduced in Injustice: Gods Among Us as Batman and his allies work towards putting the pieces of society back together while struggling against those who want to restore Superman’s regime. In the midst of the chaos, a new threat appears that will put Earth’s existence at risk.”

It looks as if both Batman and Superman’s forces will be colliding once more in Injustice 2, though the story trailer, title and hints from the voiceover in the video promise a variety of twists and turns in the tale. Coupling that with the ‘new threat’ alluded to in the synopsis, we could see old enemies forced to work together if they’re to save the planet they’re all trading blows on. While the game looks to be borrowing heavily from the dark side of the DC Extended Universe, the costumes and gameplay are surely going to be packed full of energy and color, even if that’s not the literal case.

In order to keep gamers interested however, NetherRealms Studios are going to have to do something special story-wise if they’re to protect themselves from the ‘stale’ label. Keeping much of the plot of Injustice 2 under wraps is the perfect way to start that journey, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store when the game drops this coming May.

Injustice 2 arrives on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 16th, 2017.
