With the recent release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, many fans are likely wondering whether Injustice 2, NetherRealm Studios’ 2017 fighting game, will add DLC costumes in honor of the “Snyder Cut.” No official announcements have been made of new costumes associated with the HBO Max film, and given the lack of recent updates, it may be unlikely players will see Zack Snyder’s vision of Justice League specifically commemorated in Injustice 2. Still, there are still some possibilities for new costumes and characters that could be added to the game if NetherRealm decides to revisit their version of the DC Comics universe.

One reason not to expect costumes related to Zack Snyder’s Justice League is that some of them were already added to Injustice 2 back in 2017. Shortly before the release of the original theatrical cut of the Justice League film, players had the ability to unlock movie costumes for characters such as Flash, Wonder Woman and Cyborg. For the most part, Zack Snyder’s Justice League shares the same costumes with the 2017 theatrical release of Justice League, with a few exceptions, so several of the Snyder Cut costumes have already appeared in Injustice 2.

If Injustice 2 does add costumes based on Zack Snyder’s recent film, the most likely sources for them to mine ideas from would be a Black Suit Superman costume, and costumes based on the Knightmare sequence. Zack Snyder’s Justice League features Superman wearing a black suit similar to the costume featured in comic books subsequent to the 1993 event series The Death of Superman. The black suit appeared in promotional material for the film but was not actually featured in the original 2017 theatrical release of Justice League, so that would be one option Injustice 2 could look to for DLC content based on the Snyder Cut.

Adding Knightmare DLC Could Provide New Context For Injustice 2 Battles

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice featured a sequence called Knightmare, a scenario revisited in the epilogue of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. This provides the other obvious source that the Injustice 2 game could use for new DLC content. Both films’ Knightmare scenes involve Batman seeing a vision of a future where Superman has become a threat to the world, and Batman fights a desperate battle to defeat the corrupted hero and his army of Parademons. The Knightmare scenario mirrors some of the premise of the original game Injustice: Gods Among Us.

In Injustice, Lois Lane is killed due to the machinations of the Joker, which leads Superman to slay the Joker and become the tyrannical ruler of Earth. In Batman v Superman a time-traveling Flash warned Batman that “Lois is the key,” suggesting her death is the catalyst for Superman’s villainous turn in that continuity as well, albeit with the films’ Superman corrupted by the Anti-Life Equation.

There is still some hope for Injustice 2 providing nods to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, as Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat and Injustice is apparently a fan of Snyder’s version of the film. Boon recently tweeted that he “loved Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” and suggested that if Snyder is allowed to make a sequel that he should name it “Zack Snyder’s INJUSTICE.

New Injustice 2 DLC May Seem Unlikely, But So Was The Snyder Cut

The last major expansion to the console and PC versions of Injustice 2 was in February 2018, when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were added as playable characters, though the mobile version of the game has received additional content since that time. Beyond the possibility of movie-specific costumes, Injustice 2 could potentially add new characters featured in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, such as Deathstroke, Mera, or the Martian Manhunter, all of which appear in the recent HBO Max film, but were not playable characters in Injustice 2.

While the likelihood of Injustice 2 receiving Zack Snyder’s Justice League content seems slim, many doubted that the film would ever be released in its new, drastically different form, more than three years after the original theatrical release, proving that nothing can be entirely ruled out for DC Comics fans.
