NetherRealm Studios has released a new horror-filled gameplay trailer for the upcoming Injustice 2, and this time it is Scarecrow on the psychiatrist's couch. Watching the Caped Crusader take on Crane, we see Scarecrow's frankly terrifying moves as he lurks behind his reptilian mask. While Scarecrow is relatively new to the Injustice universe, we see the fresh iteration riffing off his appearance in Rocksteady's popular Arkham games, as he towers over Batman in a nightmare-scape.

Scarecrow's look has had an overhaul, sporting a vicious hook and chain, which he wastes no time in slashing his opponents to shreds with. Also new to the game is Scarecrow's signature move, spraying opponents with fear gas and dragging them into a nightmarish dream world that features a super-sized Crane. It looks like Scarecrow won't just be using his patented fear toxin to appear more powerful; the game will put it to good use and make him as terrifying as his comic book counterpart.

Appearing on the pages of DC since 1941, Scarecrow has already undergone a revival thanks to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy - Cillian Murphy excelled as the spooky Dr. Crane and appeared as the character in all three films. Gone were the days of Scarecrow looking like something you would find in the field and he was reinvented in line with the darker New 52 era of Crane. Now, Injustice 2 promises to give us a whole new take on the character and his mind-warping trickery.

As mentioned previously, Scarecrow appeared in the Arkham games and was most notably voiced by Fringe's John Noble. Starting with a few nightmare stages in earlier games, Scarecrow went on to become the main antagonist of 2015's Arkham Knight. As for Injustice 2, it is legendary Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund who provides the voice for our hessian horror, so if anyone can provide a chilling characterization, it is him!

Although Scarecrow appeared in a cameo capacity during Injustice: Gods Among Us, the sequel reveals him to be a completely playable character. Aiming to prove it isn't just any old beat 'em up, Injustice 2 pits the good and the bad of the DC universe against each other. Bringing new additions like Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold, and Doctor Fate into the fold against Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, there will be nearly 30 playable characters to sink your scythe into.

As the DCEU expands at such a rate, now couldn't be a better time for NetherRealm and Warner Bros. to release their sequel, which certainly looks like it is upping the action with a huge roster and huge expectations. With the first game being released in 2013, fans have been mashing their controllers in anticipation for Injustice 2 ever since. Luckily, we won't have to wait too long, Injustice 2 comes to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 16, 2017.
