Injustice: Gods Among Us was one of the most successful DC Comics video games of all time. Injustice is a fighting video game populated with characters from the DC Comics UniverseIt is developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment. The storyline focuses on an alternate version of the Justice League where Superman establishes himself in a position of control, having been tricked by the Joker to kill Lois Lane and destroy Metropolis all in one fell sweep.

In addition to the immensely popular video game, Injustice has spawned a popular comic book tie-in series written by Brian Buccellato with several artists from chapter to chapter. Fans of the franchise have been waiting for Injustice 2 to be released, since the original game debuted in 2013.

Today on Twitter, creative director of NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon shared an image reading "i2.05.16.17," effectively announcing that the next installation in the Injustice video game series will be hitting stores on May 16th, 2017 - a mere four months from now!

This is the biggest announcement to come out about Injustice 2 since the character reveals from last year's San Diego Comic-Con, Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad's confirmed appearance in the story, and Ed Boon's previous Twitter teases that both Spawn and Sub-Zero may be appearing as downloadable content when the game is finally released. However, there has been much speculation in the interim about what gaming fans could be looking forward to when Injustice 2 gets into their hands.

NetherRealm and Warner Bros have worked together on the Injustice franchise as well as Batman Arkham City Lockdown - which is currently available - in the past, although many gamers are probably familiar with NetherRealm Studios' work on the Mortal Kombat franchise. Fans of both Mortal Kombat and Injustice will note obvious similarities in the setup and combat style of the two games, yet that does not appear to have kept consumers from double-dipping in their combat games.

The announcement of Injustice 2 hitting consoles this May is huge. It's one of DC and Warner Bros' most popular in-universe properties currently being released, and getting it out into the world less than a month before the Wonder Woman solo movie hits theaters is a great marketing move as well. Not only is the world of the Injustice video games being expanded in an exciting new way this May, but this is also certain to herald an exciting new comic book series.

However, the full title of Injustice 2  has yet to be revealed and almost every plot detail is being kept very close to the vest at NetherRealm. This tweet from Boon could be the first in a barrage of information coming forth or it could be the very last announcement before the game hits shelves.

Injustice 2 will be in stores May 16, 2017.
