The Atom is joining the ranks of DC’s Injustice 2 fighting game, as confirmed by a new gameplay trailer. The character will be available “soon” as a piece of extra downloadable content for the game. However, it’s unclear as of yet what it will cost to add the character to your copy of Injustice 2.

Since Injustice 2’s initial release, loads of additional content has been announced. Hellboy's addition was met with a lot of hype, although fans are still waiting for him to appear in the game. Also, a previously-released gameplay trailer teased Aquaman villain Black Manta’s future appearance in the game. Another previously-released clip showcased the skills of Black Lightning and Mortal Kombat’s Raiden, both of whom are bringing their shock-heavy abilities to Injustice 2.

Now fans can clap their eyes on The Atom’s unique skillset, which looks set to add some fun new moves to the game. He’s the first shrinking character to join the Injustice 2 roster, which makes this a particularly exciting development for DC fans. And, as they are across the board, the graphics here look pretty great:

Ray Palmer the Atom

The Atom introduction video also came with a brief story summary, explaining how the mythos of this hero will fit into the game:

“Physics prodigy Ryan Choi took on the mantle of the Atom when his mentor — and original Atom —Ray Palmer mysteriously disappeared. Now armed with quantum shrinking technology, Ryan will use the subatomic power of the quantum bio-belt to seek out his lost friend and further the fight for justice.”

Sadly for Legends of Tomorrow fans, then, this version of The Atom is not an adaptation of Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer iteration. Instead, the Injustice 2 version of the character is based on Ryan Choi, the fourth character to hold the mantle in the world of DC Comics. Similarly, the version of Firestorm in the game doesn’t match up with the one in Legends.

Still, there’s clearly a lot of fun to be had here. The Atom’s shrinking and growing powers give him a unique set of advantages, with the go-tiny-and-then-flit-around moves looking particularly effective in the gameplay trailer. It’s easy to imagine The Atom being a really fun character to choose in multiplayer battles, where you can infuriate your friends with his elusive fighting style. Interestingly, though, this video stops short of showcasing his full super move. So fans have that to look forward to.
