One of the directors and the stars of Avengers: Infinity War reveal that the film will feature one great team-up between Tom Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange. And despite being two of the newest additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both Strange and Spider-Man have, perhaps unsurprisingly, become two fan-favorite characters in the universe. With Cumberbatch set to appear briefly in this year's Thor: Ragnarok, and Holland just now coming off of the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming this month, they're two characters that it's clear Marvel is already planning big things for moving forward.

But before the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters in 2019 and Marvel begins work on a presumed sequel to Doctor Strange, the two characters are first set to appear in next year's Avengers: Infinity War. However, with so many of the Marvel characters appearing in Infinity War, it's been difficult, up until this point, to really gauge which characters will be crossing paths in the film, and which won't be. But according to those involved with Infinity War, the long-speculated Spidey and Doctor Strange team-up is not as far away as some fans might have initially thought.

The news comes thanks to two interviews that Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, and co-director, Joe Russo, gave with GMA yesterday. While all three were predictably tight-lipped about revealing any concrete details from the film, the three did tease a great partnership that blossoms between Spidey and Strange in the film, something that Joe Russo admits is a likely byproduct of their close proximity to each other in New York:

"There's a really great chemistry there. I mean, they both have a proximity to each other, if that's a hint that I can give? But anybody who's a Marvel fan will know that they both reside within the same city, and I think that Tom and Benedict have a great chemistry, and we wanted to exploit that."

For many Marvel comic book readers, this will likely come as a very exciting bit of news, because of the great relationship/partnership that Spider-Man and Doctor Strange have developed with each other throughout the years in the comics. But like Spider-Man's relationship with The Punisher, some fans weren't sure when, if ever, they'd really get to see the Strange/Spidey dynamic explored on the big screen.

This is unexpected also since it's well-known that Tom Holland has been working periodically on Infinity War from the very beginning, while Benedict Cumberbatch just arrived on the Infinity War set a few weeks ago. But despite their schedules not seemingly matching up so far, it looks as though the two characters will still be able to develop a repertoire with each other in the film, even while they're also busy fighting off Thanos and his Black Order. Whether or not that relationship between Strange and Spider-Man is continued in future MCU films will be interesting to see, especially since the two are closer to each other geographically than most of the other MCU heroes. And it's even possible that Doctor Strange could be the mystery MCU character in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. Only time will tell.
