As Marvel's Cinematic Universe comes together for Avengers: Infinity War, Michael Rooker reveals how fallen hero Yondu would take on the Mad Titan Thanos.
While the MCU is known for its often temporary deaths, the demise of Yondu at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of the franchise's most heart-breaking moments. Giving Rooker's blue-skinned Ravager an emotional arc over two movies, director James Gunn created a beloved member of the Guardians of the Galaxy who fit perfectly with the rest of the outcast group. However, while defeating Ego the Living Planet was a tough enough job on its own, Rooker isn't underestimating the raw power of Josh Brolin as Thanos.
Speaking at the Awesome Con in Washington DC (via Comic Book), Rooker explained how thinks Yondu would try and defeat Thanos:
"I'd shoot him with my arrow or something. When he's not looking! Preferably by surprise 'cause I wouldn't want to go head-to-head with him. He has the thing with the things on it!"
Sneaking up behind someone, then knocking them down while no one is looking, sounds exactly like how Yondu would try and dispatch Thanos without letting him use those powerful Infinity Stones. That being said, Rooker went on to explain that even with Yondu's heroic streak and willingness to lay his life on the line, he would probably be no match for Thanos:
"Yeah, Yondu's arrow is pretty formidable, but you know, with those stones that's power. That's raw, awesome power he's got and he's gonna wield it very soon. I hope you all go to the movies and see."
Sadly, Gunn has confirmed that Yondu really is permanently dead and will not return to the MCU outside of flashbacks; meaning Rooker's best-laid plans will never make it into the franchise. Of course, with Sean Gunn's Kraglin last seen handling Yondu's Yaka Arrow, maybe he could pick up where Rooker left off?
Sure, Yondu may not have the strength of Hulk, the power of the Asgardian gods or a vibranium shield, but it doesn't stop Rooker imagining that the Yondu and his arrow would mean big trouble for Thanos. Thankfully, even in the absence of Yondu, his spirit lives on through the likes of Star-Lord, the current lineup of the Guardians, and the original Guardians team that was briefly glimpsed during Vol. 2's post-credit scenes.
With the Guardians of the Galaxy having a crucial role in Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers 4, there is no doubt that the team will be feeling the loss of Yondu. Although fan-favorites like Thor, Iron Man, and the Winter Soldier will all cross paths with the intergalactic rogues, things just won't be the same without Rooker's whistling wisecracker running around and causing trouble. Despite not being part of the supersized superhero ensemble, at least Rooker is encouraging audiences to go and see his former costars in action when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters later this month.
