Ke Huy Quan, who played the young sidekick Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, says he’s open to playing the character again. The second installment in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones franchise, Temple of Doom (1984) serves as a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). The film sees Harrison Ford reprise the role of archaeologist and adventurer Dr. Henry Walton Jones Jr./Indiana Jones as he travels from Old Shanghai to India in search of the magical Sankara stone, which has been stolen by a Thuggee cult. Aiding Indy in his mission is the street-savvy youngster Short Round (Quan) and nightclub singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw).

Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, Temple of Doom is largely remembered as a classic and is also notable for being the feature debut of Quan—who was just 12 years old at the time of filming. Quan went on to star as yet another iconic character, Data Wang, in The Goonies (1985) before taking on the lead role in the martial arts movie Breathing Fire (1991). Not long after, Quan left acting, citing the limited number of opportunities in the industry for Asian Americans. Quan has since returned in Netflix’s Finding 'Ohana (2021) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). Now, fans can’t help but wonder if he’ll ever revisit “Shorty.”

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Quan addressed the possibility of playing Data and Short Round again. While discussing the effort that has gone into a potential Goonies revival/sequel, the 50-year-old actor said he’d love to revisit his beloved characters. However, there are no plans to do so at the moment. Read the full quote below:

“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies changed my life, they changed the trajectory of my life. I still can’t believe, 38 years later, I still have people come up to me and tell me how their life has been impacted by those two movies. So I’m grateful to be a part of that... And yes, over the years, I always dreamed of revisiting those characters. In fact, we tried for many years, making a Goonies 2. We’ve hired numerous writers with numerous drafts, but it just never came to be. And so, even my return to acting, it was once, to me, a very, very distant dream. [Everything Everywhere All at Once directors] the Daniels made that distant dream into a reality today and I’m so grateful to them. So, yeah, I’d love to.”

“I’m excited that we’re going to get Indiana Jones 5. I love Harrison Ford very much, and I can’t wait for him to don that fedora hat once again, and crack that whip another time. So yeah, I’m very happy.”

Harrison Ford is the only confirmed star of the original Indiana Jones films announced to be returning for the upcoming fifth film—which is directed by James Mangold rather than Spielberg. While plot details are being kept under wraps, the film is rumored to involve time travel and will feature a supporting cast including Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Olivier Richters, Toby Jones, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, and Anthony Ingruber. Unfortunately, Indiana Jones 5—which wrapped filming earlier this year—will likely be Ford’s last outing as the character.

As for a new Goonies film, there have been plenty of rumors and reports suggesting a sequel or a revival. As Quan mentioned, scripts have been written but nothing has ever come to fruition. The idea of a grown-up Goonies crew likely isn’t as appealing as the original and would rely too heavily on nostalgia. However, this is not to say a Goonies project focusing on a new generation couldn’t work with cameos from the original cast. Now that Quan is back acting in films like Everything Everywhere All at Once, the actor could always reprise the role of Data even if Not-So-Short Round never reunites with Indiana Jones onscreen.
