Indiana Jones 5 is all shot and set to come out in June 2023. Fans are excited about the new characters played by Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and others. Pictures from the set have shown off numerous characters with terrific costumes who look destined to become iconic characters.

Even from the first installment, Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Indiana Jones franchise has always been full of colorful and iconic characters. Terrific actors like Sean Connery, John Rhys-Davies, and Cate Blanchett have brilliantly brought these characters to life in ways that fans will never forget. However, only some characters prove that they are the most iconic.

Marcus Brody

Indy's colleague and one of his best friends was the curator of the museum. Raiders of the Lost Ark set the character as a past-his-prime yet an ambitious lover of history. He even tells Indy that he would go after the Ark himself if he were ten years younger. But the third installment would introduce a different layer to the character.

Marcus decided to accompany Indy on his quest to find the Holy Grail and his dad in Last Crusade. Brody was a fish out of the water and the comic relief of the film. The character was brilliantly played by the charming Denholm Elliot, sadly the actor passed away in 1992 but the character has lived on in expanded material.

Colonel Doctor Irina Spalko

A few years after shining as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings films, Cate Blanchett took the role of villainous Russian scientist Irina Spalko. With a unique and memorable look and expertise with a rapier, she was unlike any other character in the series. She also possessed the ability to read some minds, though was unsuccessful in reading Indy's.

A favorite of Joseph Stalin, Spalko led a small army of Russian soldiers in the quest for the power of Akator. Under her command, they managed to infiltrate the top-secret American installation of Area 51 where they stole extraterrestrial remains. Spalko sought both knowledge and the power to control the minds of her enemies, but she was disintegrated by the interdimensional being at Akator.

René Belloq

English actor Paul Freeman took on the role of deceitful French archeologist René Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark. He deceives the Hovitos and later sides with the Nazis to dig for the Ark of the Covenant at Tanis, Egypt.

As Indy's intellectual equal he challenged Jones throughout the film and called his bluff when he threatens to blow up the Ark. Director Steven Spielberg removed frames from the scene to make it look like Belloq swallowed a fly. Belloq blew up when looking at the Ark's contents.

Elsa Schneider

A morally grey character, Elsa only sided with the Nazis to get to the grail.  In the end, her greed was her downfall, as reaching for the grail caused her to fall into the Abyss at the Canyon of the Crescent Moon. Aside from appearing alongside Sean Connery in the film, she also appeared in the 1985 Roger Moore James Bond film A View to a Kill.

Mola Ram

He also possessed the Blood of the Kali, which turned anyone who drank it into a mindless devil worshipper. His cult found 3 of the Sankara Stones and he had kidnapped children digging in the mines for the other 2, but Indy used the stones to defeat him.

Marion Ravenwood

Abner Ravenwood's daughter was used by Jones ten years before the events of Raider of the Lost Ark. In that time she came to hate Indy as her father dragged her around the world. Marion ended up in Nepal where she operated the Raven Bar. She learned how to hold a drink and was introduced to beating a large burly man in a drinking contest

Marion had the Staff of Ra headpiece, which brought her the attention of both Indy and the Nazis. She accompanied Indy to Egypt where she was kidnapped by the Nazis and faced the dangerous snakes of the Well of the Souls. Marion returned to the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull where she revealed to Indy that Mutt was their son. Indy and Marion married at the end of the film and fans are hopeful for her return in Indy 5.

Sallah

Sallah was the best digger in Egypt and a loyal friend to Jones. He gave Indy important inside information about the happenings at the Nazi dig site at Tanis. Together they learned the location of the Well of the Souls and retrieved the Ark of the Covenant.

The loveable John Rhys Davies brought warmth and fun to the Indiana Jones films with his memorable laugh. He returned in Last Crusade when he helped in Indy's quest for the Holy Grail. He was used as comic relief several times such as when he stole the Nazi's camels as compensation for destroying his brother-in-law's car.

Henry Jones Senior

Only James Bond could play the father of Indiana Jones. That was Steven Spielberg's reasoning behind the casting of Sean Connery and it was a masterstroke as his chemistry with Harrison Ford was tremendous. Connery's performance elevated Last Crusade and fans have long been split over whether it or Raiders of the Lost Ark was the best Indy film.

The quirky character was known for calling his son Junior, disliking that his son chose the name of his dog Indiana. Henry's lifelong obsession was the lore of the Holy Grail and he drank from the cup to save his life at the end of the movie. The character was terrifically portrayed by Lloyd Owen in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, with "Travels With Father" being a standout story for him.

Short Round

As a young boy, Shorty was caught trying to pick up Indy's pocket in Shanghai. Indy took him under his wing and the 2 developed a heartwarming bond which was on display in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Shorty is used for comic relief but also rescues Indy from the trance of Kali.  Jonathan Key Hu Quan was chosen to play the character, having never acted before. Quan would appear in The Goonies and returned to acting with Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Indiana Jones

Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark

He wears an awesome outfit, he searches for artifacts in tombs, he teaches in college, he punches nazis, and he's afraid of snakes. Indiana Jones is one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema. Developed by George Lucas from the inspiration of 1930's serials and 1950's adventure films, Indy immediately became a household name.

Harrison Ford landed the role after Tom Selleck had to back out, and Indy has become Ford's most recognizable role. Although Indy has been portrayed by several other actors, it is hard for fans to accept anyone besides Ford as Indy. The upcoming release of Indiana Jones 5 will be Ford's final turn as Indiana Jones and fans are wondering what will be the future of the character.
