A new Indiana Jones game has been officially announced, although details remain extremely scarce beyond a short trailer that was released by Bethesda earlier today. The new title, made by MachineGames and Lucasfilm Games, is a new and original story, but could it actually be a sequel to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis?

The teaser trailer for Indiana Jones' new game, which lasts only around thirty seconds, leaves a lot up to the imagination. Still, it's exciting that a new Indiana Jones title is in the works, and it could possibly even be a sequel to Fate of Atlantis, arguably the greatest Indiana Jones video game of all time.

Releasing in 1992, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was a point-and-click adventure title from LucasArts. The company made a name for itself in the '80s and '90s by making great adventure games with original IPs like Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacleand Fate of Atlantis is no different. The game was a critical and commercial success, with clever puzzle designs and an enhanced voice-acted version that made gameplay feel especially immersive. The plot involves Indiana Jones fighting Nazis in exotic Greek locales, and the well-written story still holds up even today. So, it makes a lot of sense that a new video game would want to follow in Fate of Atlantis' footsteps.

Does Indiana Jones' New Game Take Place After Fate of Atlantis?

The real question is whether or not the new Indiana Jones game takes place before or after Fate of Atlantis. The teaser trailer doesn't reveal much, but a ticket stub for Rome is shown and marked 1937. If the game actually takes place in 1937, then the new game will be set after Raiders of the Lost Ark. This is important because Fate of Atlantis takes place in 1939, about a year after the events of The Last Crusade film.

The influence of Indiana Jones is seen in countless video games now, with games like the Uncharted series and Tomb Raider successfully mimicking Dr. Jones' style. So, it makes a lot of sense that Lucasfilm Games would want to make a new Indiana Jones video game, even if it doesn't appear to be a direct sequel to Fate of Atlantis.

For now, that's all players really know about the upcoming Indiana Jones video game. An actual release date for the game is probably still years away, and even if it isn't a sequel to Fate of Atlantis, fans can hope that it will at least be just as good.
