While almost nothing is known about the project, Bethesda's new Indiana Jones game is already more exciting than the upcoming film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The beloved franchise has been taking fans on archeological adventures since 1981, with Harrison Ford famously portraying the titular hero. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will take the aging Indy on possibly his final adventure, but Bethesda's Indiana Jones game has much more potential.

Revealed in early 2021, an Indiana Jones game from Bethesda, MachineGames and Lucasfilm is currently in the works. While little is known about the exciting project, Wolfenstein developer MachineGames has already proven its proficiency with fast-paced action in a World War 2 setting. The game's reveal trailer hints that it will be set in Rome in 1937, placing the project between the events of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and its sequel The Last Crusade. It remains unclear if Harrison Ford will return to voice the iconic adventurer, or if a new performer will step in to portray the younger version of Indy.

While details are scarce, MachineGames' new Indiana Jones adventure is more exciting than Dial of Destiny. An intriguing update on Bethesda's Indiana Jones game, recently delivered by industry icon Todd Howard, suggests that the game will feature innovative gameplay and will be a love letter to the beloved series. While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will portray an aging Indy in the 1960s, the video game can deliver a new adventure with young Indy in the franchise's iconic 1930s setting. The franchise thrives on pulpy adventures set against the backdrop of the rise of Nazi Germany, and a game can immerse players in that fantasy which Dial of Destiny fails to deliver.

Harrison Ford May Not Appear In The Indiana Jones Game

While embodying a young Indiana Jones is much more appealing than watching an aging version of the beloved hero, it remains unclear whether Harrison Ford will voice Indiana Jones in the MachineGames project. The character of Indiana Jones is inseparable from the iconic Star Wars and Blade Runner star, so his reprisal could give Dial of Destiny a leg up over MachineGames' interactive installment. With the series' fifth film being billed as Ford's final performance as Indy, it seems unlikely that the actor will return for Bethesda's game. However, if Ford does lend his voice to the project it would cement the video game as the most faithful modern Indiana Jones project.

Bethesda and MachineGames' Indiana Jones project is incredibly exciting, and it has the potential to be a much better series installment than the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Rather than following an aging Indy in the 1960s, the upcoming game will take players on a classic archeological adventure during the 1930s. While the Indiana Jones game's release date will probably arrive after Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, experiencing an authentic and interactive Indy experience should be worth the wait.
