Indiana Jones 5 producer Frank Marshall reveals Phoebe Waller-Bridge's role in the upcoming sequel. Harrison Ford is returning for the currently untitled fifth Indiana Jones movie to reprise his role as the titular bullwhip-wielding archeologist. Last year, Indiana Jones 5 cast Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the film's female lead alongside Ford and soon after that, Fantastic Beasts 3's Mads Mikkelsen was cast in a mystery role, which is likely the main villain. Other franchise newcomers include Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, Antonio Banderas, and Olivier Richters in undisclosed roles.

The upcoming Indiana Jones film will be the first entry into the long-running Lucasfilm franchise since Disney acquired the studio. It is also the first installment not directed by Steven Spielberg nor written by George Lucas. Instead, Indiana Jones 5 tapped two-time Oscar nominee James Mangold as director and Ford v Ferrari screenwriters Jez and John-Henry Butterworth for the script. Not much is known about the sequel's story or characters other than what has been gleaned through Indiana Jones 5 set photos, which suggest a storyline involving time travel.

Now, Indiana Jones 5 producer Frank Marshall has revealed one newcomer's role in the upcoming sequel. In response to a photo of Ford and Waller-Bridge taken at the recent D23 Expo, Marshall simply stated in his tweet, "Indy and his goddaughter, Helena." Check out the post below:

Waller-Bridge is best known for her irreverent brand of humor and frequent fourth-wall breaks from the Amazon series Fleabag, though she also lent her voice to the droid L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story. There is still much to learn about her character in Indiana Jones 5, though Marshall's reveal is beginning to break down the immense shroud of secrecy surrounding not only Waller-Bridge's female lead, but the long-awaited film itself. In addition to being the goddaughter of Indiana Jones named Helena, the franchise's legendary composer John Williams previously described Waller-Bridge's character as "an adventurer and a femme fatale."

Given Waller-Bridge's background in comedy, it will be interesting to see her on-screen chemistry with Ford's Indy, who is no stranger to dry wit himself. Now that their godfather-goddaughter dynamic is known, more details about their relationship should come to light in the coming months, especially once the Indiana Jones 5 trailer is finally released to the public following the secretive screening at D23. Indiana Jones 5 is currently slated to arrive in theaters next summer.
