James Mangold discusses working with legends on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Indiana Jones returns for a new adventure and will once again be fighting Nazis in the fifth installment. Jones is on the hunt for a dangerous ancient relic with his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, but Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who now works for NASA, is also searching for the relic, hoping to use it for his own nefarious purposes.

Screen Rant spoke with Mangold after the Star Wars Celebration Lucafilms Showcase panel about directing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He discussed working with incredible talent, including Harrison Ford, John Williams, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, and Stephen Spielberg. Mangold described the experience as "walking among legends." Check out Mangold's full quote below:

You're walking among legends, and you're aware of it. The only wonderful thing on this project is that all the legends are embracing you and are happy to be there with you. Whether you're talking about Harrison or Steven or Kathy or George or John Williams. What an opportunity. It's like being on an all-star baseball team. You just hope you rise to the occasion.

James Mangold Brings The Saga Of Indiana Jones To A Close

Indiana Jones' iconic hat and whip in the Dial of Destiny trailer

Mangold has the difficult task of bringing the story of Indiana Jones to a close, with Disney confirming that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be the final movie. This will also be the first Indiana Jones movie that Spielberg isn't directing, adding extra weight to Mangold's shoulders. Indiana Jones began with Raiders of the Lost Arc in 1981 and has grown into a huge franchise spanning five movies, a television series, novels, comics, and video games.

Mangold could be the perfect director to step up to the task, clearly understanding what draws fans to Indiana Jones, with the trailer tapping into the comedy, action, and adventure audiences love. His Oscar-nominated movie Logan is the perfect example of what he can bring to the end of the Indiana Jones story. Logan brings the epic story of X-Men hero Wolverine to an end in a powerful, character-driven drama.

Mangold can bring this same character-driven storytelling to Indiana Jones' last adventure while tapping into the iconic action-adventure tone that Spielberg and Lucas established. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny brings Jones' greatest enemies back to the forefront, but in an even darker capacity, as these Nazis were recruited to NASA by the United States government. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny can show how Jones grapples with this fact as he works to save the world from an enemy that everyone believes to be gone.
