Jones will once again face off against Nazis after the U.S. government recruits former Nazi scientists to NASA to beat the Soviet Union during the Space Race. Jones, with the help of his goddaughter Helena Shaw, is on the hunt for an ancient, powerful relic, but ex-Nazi and now-member of NASA Jürgen Voller is also searching for the relic, hoping to use it to right past mistakes.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is directed by James Mangold from a script written by Mangold, Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny stars Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, and John Rhys-Davies. The final installment of the Indiana Jones franchise will debut at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023.

Screen Rant spoke with director James Mangold at Star Wars Celebration about Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He discusses joining the franchise and describes it as "walking among legends." Mangold also explains what inspired his recently announced Star Wars movie, which will delve into the origins of the Jedi 25,000 years before the Skywalker Saga.

James Mangold on Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny

Screen Rant: Watching that footage inside of Star Wars Celebration was amazing. Indiana Jones brought me back to my childhood. Can you talk about joining an established franchise like Indiana Jones, balancing its specific tone, and bringing your own style to it?

James Mangold: You're walking among legends, and you're aware of it. The only wonderful thing on this project is that all the legends are embracing you and are happy to be there with you. Whether you're talking about Harrison or Stephen or Kathy or George or John Williams. What an opportunity. It's like being on an all-star baseball team. You just hope you rise to the occasion.

Mr. Mangold, you were just announced for one of the new Star Wars films. We're going all the way back to the very beginning with Jedi Prime, which is what I'm gonna call them. What inspired you to start there and until that story?

James Mangold: Everything you just said. The idea of where it all started. To make a Star Wars Zero, if you will. Where was the Force born? To me, a movie always has to have a question to answer. Some singular thing that you can say it's about. Not just connecting plot of who built this when and who's gonna defeat [who], but what's it about? To me, this is about this discovery.
