Antonio Banderas has revealed character details for his role in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Banderas had a big year in 2022, with roles in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Uncharted. The former currently has a 95 percent rating from critics and 94 percent from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also seen major box office success, so far earning over $340 million worldwide against its $90 million budget. Besides the sword-swinging feline, Banderas is also known for playing the swashbuckling masked vigilante Zorro.

In conversation with the Inside Total Film podcast (via Collider), Banderas provided some character details for his upcoming role in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He also discussed his experience working with Harrison Ford. Read what Banderas had to say in full below:

It was beautiful to just be close to [Harrison Ford]. Some interviewers today, they say to me, 'Oh my God, I was 7 when Shrek 2 came out, and so now I'm 27 and interviewing you and I've been watching your movies since that time.' But the same thing happened to me with Harrison. I remember the first time I saw Indiana Jones, and I flipped out. So just being there, it was beautiful. My character is very little. He's not a bad guy, he's a friend of Indiana, helping at some point in the movie. But it's not very big.

Everything We Know About Indiana Jones And The Dial of Destiny

Mads Mikkelsen as Jurgen Voller looking in a chest in Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny

The most recent, and most commonly dubbed the worst, film of the Indiana Jones franchise came out in 2008, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In it, the mantle was seemingly passed down to Shia LaBeouf, but the actor won't be returning in the new movie. Coming back alongside Ford is John Rhys-Davies as Sallah. As far as new characters, Mads Mikkelsen will play the main villain Voller, with Boyd Holbrook as his right-hand henchman Klaber. Phoebe Waller-Bridge will play Helena, Indiana Jones’ goddaughter and suspected heiress to the iconic fedora and whip. Also in the film are Toby Jones, Thomas Kretschmann, and bodybuilder Olivier Richters.

Not much is known about Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's plot, but the space race of the 1960s will serve as the setting, and Mikkelsen’s Voller is an ex-Nazi working for NASA. Steven Spielberg won’t be returning to direct, but he’s put the franchise in the hands of James Mangold, who’s best known for directing Logan. Another big name attached to the new film is John Williams, who has scored every Indy adventure since the original.

It's understandable many of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's details are being kept under wraps. Still, it's clear the franchise is in good hands with Mangold in the director’s chair, and its returning and new cast members are encouraging. Come this summer, audiences will find out what exactly the Dial of Destiny is and how Banderas’ character will help Indy out on his latest adventure.
