Aparna from Indian Matchmaking hates comedy, beaches, the outdoor, and relaxing. Or at least that’s what the dating reality show made its viewers believe. Turns out the lawyer actually does appreciate humor. But, only as long as it's good. Screen Rant spoke to Aparna about comedy, Indian Matchmaking memes, and everything in between.

Netflix’s newest reality dating show Indian Matchmaking has been making waves the world over. Be it the show’s refreshing take on traditional arranged marriages which fans love, or it’s the subtle promotion of the regressive aspect of it all that fans hate, the show is surely making everyone talk. Or criticize, or make viral memes. But when it comes to Indian Matchmaking and comedy, the only person who comes to mind is one of the participants, Aparna Shewakramani. An eligible bachelorette who takes matchmaker Sima Taparia’s help in finding a suitable spouse for herself, Aparna has an oddly specific list of criteria. Be it her wanting her future husband to know about Bolivia’s salt flats or him not being a lawyer, Aparna knows exactly what’s she’s looking for in her soulmate. But apart from these things, Aparna tells Taparia that she wants someone who’s “not the funniest guy in the room.” In fact, when she Taparia tells her about a potential match’s apparent sense of humor, the attorney makes a face and goes, “You know how I hate comedy.” Even though she, later on, explains that her dislike stems from her previously dating a “funny” man unsuccessfully, her hate for comedy resonates with Indian Matchmaking fans long after the show’s ending. Aparna has now revealed that this was very much a misconception in a couple of interviews, including her recent one with Screen Rant.

When we asked the Indian Matchmaking star about what she thinks of the abundance of memes she’s been getting tagged on, Aparna confessed that she’s “laughing alongside everyone.” The Houston native continued, “There is so much humor in these memes"  and said how she’s been appreciating them for what they are, which is, “Good-natured creativity made by viewers who enjoyed the show.” Keep the memes coming, folks!

Aparna also made an appearance on a bonus episode of Indian Matchmaking by Netflix India where she confirmed that it was the “bad” comedy that doesn’t like. When host Dolly Singh asked her to rate how much she hates comedy on a scale of 1-10, Aparna was quick to reply, “Bad comedy? A lot. I hate it at a 10, but good comedy I can enjoy.” Explaining that good comedy is hard to find these days, she also added how she’s rediscovering it via Indian Matchmaking’s process and the memes that have followed. Aparna spoke about enjoying them and the content that bloggers around the world are creating about the Netflix show. She confessed, “I don’t think that I’m opposed to humor, but overall a lot of people are not funny even though they think that they are.

As odd as her saying that she hates comedy may have sounded on Indian Matchmaking, it does seem like Aparna’s sense of humor is refined and limited to the “good” stuff. The captions she uses on her Instagram are punny and lately, filled with references to Sima Aunty and the show! From declaring her love for ketchup (Sorry Vinay and Nadia) to controversially disclosing that her favorite color is orange, Aparna is nothing short of a good-humored person herself.
