Will Nadia be ghosted again? Will matchmaker Geeta replace Sima Taparia? Is Akshay’s mother doing alright? These are just a few questions that keep Indian Matchmaking fans up at night long after the Netflix show premiered in July. The reality dating show ended on a list of cliffhangers, and never really told viewers what it means to be “flexible.” Indian Matchmaking fans are in search of answers that can only be found in season two of the popular series that took reality TV by storm. So, is a second season really happening? Here are all the details!
Streaming giant Netflix introduced Indian Matchmaking to an audience that was already impressed by its selection of unscripted dating shows. After Dating Around, Love Is Blind, and Too Hot to Handle, the platform switched to a traditional form of dating – arranged marriages – with Indian Matchmaking. The Oscar-nominated Smriti Mundhra provided an even bigger platform for Mumbai’s top matchmaker Sima Taparia to work her magic. The show’s concept had singles swipe left on dating apps and super-like Taparia to find them a match, which drew the Indian Matchmaking fans in. But what really got them to stay were the diverse personalities of the participants, their comments, their biased thoughts, and, of course, the star of the show: Taparia. The internet went on a meme-making frenzy, while several fans called out the show for making regressive cultural practices look “cool.” But this just ended up attracting more attention to the Netflix show, making it shoot to the top of trending topics and rankings alike. If there’s one thing Indian Matchmaking fans are hoping for now, it's season two.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed a second season of Indian Matchmaking...yet. However, the platform doesn’t shy away from investing in titles that make major moolah. When Decider asked Mundhra if there was any discussion about diversifying the show’s concept by introducing same-sex couples, she replied, “It’s entirely possible that the scope of Taparia’s clientele expands into same-sex couples and all different kinds of people. But hopefully, there’ll be a season two, and maybe there will be even more of that.” Although her reply here did hint at a possible new season for Indian Matchmaking, she teased it further while speaking to OprahMag. The last few minutes of the reality show saw Taparia meet a new client, Richa, in San Diego, California. Richa’s name did get a little lost amidst the show’s popular stars like Aparna, Akshay, and Pradhyuman, but her comments on wanting a “not too dark, you know, fair-skinned,” partner sparked some outrage. Richa’s story on Indian Matchmaking ended on a cliffhanger, and many are certain her journey with Taparia was caught on camera. Mundhra addressed this unfinished storyline with, “That's our little wink to Netflix to give us another season, please." She added, “The story continues,” while talking about Sima’s work both on camera and off. "I truly hope that we're lucky enough to get a second season," added Mundhra in earnest.
Taking Mundhra’s statements into account, season two of Indian Matchmaking will have Taparia leading the search party for “flexible” spouses yet again. Beyond Richa's controversial story, one can agree that all the popular characters on Indian Matchmaking had ambiguous endings. There’s a high chance of them returning for a second stint to see if their stars align. But it’s the production of season 2 that might actually be a tedious task. The show’s USA-based cast members like Shekar and Rupam agreed to online auditions for the show. Given the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown, all the auditions for a new season may happen online, but coordination for shooting in-person meetings could be difficult.
Indian Matchmaking’s reigning queen Taparia has also spoken about the possibility of a season two. “The show is still very young. Netflix will decide in time to come," she said (via Pink Villa). The ball certainly lies in Netflix’s court now as per her and Mundhra’s statements.
