Roland Emmerich's Independence Day: Resurgence - the long-awaited sequel to the filmmaker's 1996 alien invasion blockbuster - arrives in theaters in less than two weeks (at the time of writing this), meaning 20th Century Fox has begun the final stretch of marketing for the big-budget sci-fi/action tentpole. Past official trailers and TV spots for Resurgence have tended to highlight the film's mass-scale destruction and spectacle of humanity's next battle against their extraterrestrial enemies, whereas the viral marketing has focused more on the movie's characters (both new and familiar) and bringing moviegoers up to speed on life in the Independence Day universe over the past twenty years.

Not so surprisingly, that continues to be the approach with Fox's latest round of marketing (both official and viral) for Emmerich's Independence Day followup. That includes the above clip, taken from the action sequence in Resurgence where the Earth Space Defense fighter pilots - including Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth) and the grown-up version of Dylan Hiller (Jessie Usher) from the original film - engage in a dogfight to the death with the alien invaders' own fighter pilots, as they mount an attack against the ESD's forces.

Fox has also unveiled another clip from Resurgence that showcases the gravity-manipulating technology that Earth's alien attackers have developed, allowing them to not only tear cities (as well as their landmarks) apart more effectively, but then send them crashing back down to the Earth's surface to cause even more destruction (and faster, too). You can check out that clip below, followed by the latest series of viral clips unveiled for the film. (And in case you missed it, go HERE for another Resurgence scene excerpt that dropped online last week.)

The above Resurgence viral clips - presented as a series of in-universe video interviews with returning characters from the first Independence Day - hit on certain plot points that have been addressed in Resurgence viral clips past, while also shedding light on a few subjects that had not been covered before. For instance, the grown-up version of Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe) reiterates that the world changed drastically following the "War of 1996", while Jasmine Hiller (Vivica A. Fox) discusses the noble death of her husband Steven Hiller in the Independence Day universe's version of the 1990s (further emphasizing that yes, Will Smith won't be appearing in this sequel, outside of maybe a flashback sequence or archival footage/photographs from the original Independence Day).

Where David Levinson's (Jeff Goldblum) status as a key founding member of the ESD has been well-established through the Independence Day: Resurgence marketing thus far (both the official and viral variety), less attention has been paid to his father, Julius Levinson (Judd Hirsch), who it turns out wrote a famous book about his experiences in the original Independence Day movie, oh-so-humbly titled "How I Saved the World". It's probably safe to assume that Hirsch's character will once again be a source of comedic relief in Resurgence as he was in the first movie, for related reasons.
