Warner Bros. has released a short behind the scenes video for director Christopher Nolan’s critically lauded blockbuster Inception.
The purpose of the release is likely two-fold – one to help promote the Inception Blu-ray and DVD sets that were released earlier this month, and two, to draw attention to the film as we approach awards season.
Inception has been nominated for four Golden Globes including Best Picture and Best Director (which the video highlights right at the top) and will likely also receive Academy Awards nominations for both of those categories – as well as several more.
The feature feels a bit more promotional in tone than a fully fleshed out behind the scenes piece, yet it is effective as an appetizer for the more comprehensive limited edition briefcase set.

Most of the piece is spent extolling the (astounding) talents of the creative team behind the production — which is what makes it feel like more of a promotional video, rather than a proper behind the scenes feature. The video does tease glimpses at some of the more impressive scenes in the film, including the breathtakingly beautiful, and intricate, zero gravity hallway scene.
In addition to the small insights that the feature provides, director Christopher Nolan says something towards the end of the video that in many ways defines his career as a filmmaker – as well as one of the greatest achievements of this film.
“In Inception we combined a lot of different elements, it’s a love story at the heart of it. My ambition was to create a world that embraced all different types of human experience, all the different types of grand scale Hollywood entertainment that I like to imagine is going to come on screen when I sit in the movie theater.”
What Inception does, so gorgeously, is marry the traditional pop-corn spectacle, with the sometimes less accessible, often intellectual, art-house film. Nolan has indeed defined how to make a “filmmakers film” in contemporary Hollywood.
Inception is available now on DVD and Blu-ray.
