The creator of the canceled CW show In the Dark teases that the impending series finale will still be a satisfying ending. The show, which premiered in 2019 and is currently airing season 4, follows Murphy Mason (Perry Mattfeld), an indolent blind woman who finds purpose in her life when she sets off to solve the murder of her friend. The ensemble cast of the series also includes Brooke Markham, Casey Deidrick, Keston John, the dogs Levi and Trip (as Murphy's guide dog Pretzel), and Rich Sommer, who is best known for his roles in classic television series like The Office and AMC's Mad Men.

The CW network has had a tumultuous beginning of the year. It was rumored that the network was going to be sold after its parent companies WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS claimed it had never made a profit since its inception in the mid-2000s, and during that period none of the series that were on the bubble got renewal announcements. After an unusually long waiting period, a huge swath of shows got the ax, including three shows from their widely popular Arrowverse franchise — BatwomanNaomi, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow — and spin-off or reboot series like DynastyCharmedLegacies, and Roswell, New MexicoIn the Dark was also canceled ahead of the season 4 finale, which is set to air on September 5, 2022.

TVLine had the opportunity to sit down with In the Dark creator Corinne Kingsbury to discuss the impending series finale. She revealed that, even though the series hadn't been canceled when they shot the finale, they also hadn't been renewed. Just in case their season finale turned out to be their series finale, they filmed an alternate ending that avoided cliffhangers. This will be the ending they use in September, and Kingsbury promises that "fans will be happy with our ending." Read her full quote and check out an image from the finale below:

We actually hadn’t gotten picked up as we were writing the end of the season, and we knew there was a possibility we wouldn’t get a Season 5. So we wrote and shot two endings — one with a cliffhanger, and one that wraps up our series in a satisfying way. I think fans will be happy with our ending. It feels pretty perfect to me.

In the Dark CW Finale

Kingsbury's story echoes those of other CW creators whose shows were on the bubble. Creators like Julie Plec of Legacies were given the opportunity to prep for the end and make sure they wrapped up their stories in a satisfying manner. The only show for which that doesn't seem to have been the case is Charmed, which ended on an exciting promise that season 5 would bring back some of the cast of the original Charmed.

In the Dark was one of The CW's rare original series, so fans are certainly going to regret the loss of the show. However, this is at least the best-case scenario in that the creators had the foresight to make sure their abrupt cancellation didn't also make for an abrupt ending. With only 5 episodes left, viewers can rest assured that they can breathe easily and prepare for the end without any undue anxiety.
