Jon M. Chu's movie musical In the Heights is officially available on HBO Max, one day earlier than initially planned. Based on the hit Broadway musical by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel MirandaIn the Heights takes place in the New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights and follows its Latino residents as they dream of a brighter future during the hottest days of the year. Anthony Ramos stars as Usnavi, the owner of the local bodega who serves as the primary narrator. The stage version of In the Heights was a major success on Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2008.

In the Heights was originally slated to premiere last summer, but the coronavirus pandemic pushed it off to 2021. With its June 11 release, it became one of the many Warner Bros. movies planned to debut both in theaters and on HBO Max. It comes on the heels of recent projects like Mortal Kombat and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Both of those movies arrived on HBO Max on Friday, but In the Heights is bucking that tradition.

In the Heights is available to stream now on HBO Max. Chu confirmed the news on social media when he shared a picture of himself, Ramos, and Hamilton star Christopher Jackson (who also makes a cameo in In the Heights) and added the hashtag "#OutNOW." Additionally, Marc Anthony (Mr. de la Vega in the film) celebrated In the Heights' release as well.

HBO Max doesn't release streaming figures, so In the Heights' complete performance will remain a mystery. However, it's likely that the musical extravaganza will top the box office charts this weekend. In the Heights has been greeted with glowing reviews, amounting to a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing. Plus, Miranda's star power remains strong after last year's Hamilton movie on Disney+. The full numbers will arrive at the end of the weekend, but In the Heights' reign effectively begins today.

In addition to Ramos, In the Heights stars Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Stephanie Beatriz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Olga Merediz, and Jimmy Smits. It's just one of a few major musical adaptations coming this year, with Dear Evan Hansen and West Side Story slated for the later months. With its infectious soundtrack and colorful dance numbers, In the Heights feels like the perfect musical for summer, and it's officially available for fans' viewing pleasure now. If the reviews are to be believed, it's going to be quite the crowd-pleaser.
