A Marvel editor may have accidentally revealed an upcoming X-Men title, possibly hinting that fans are about to get a new comic called Immortal X-Men. The X-Men books are going through a time of transition right now. Back in 2019, superstar comic book writer Jonathan Hickman headed up a relaunch of the entire franchise that revolutionized the X-Men. He'd originally intended to tell an ongoing story that would run for about five years, but plans change, and Hickman is stepping back from the X-Men line.

Hickman's Inferno series will be his final X-Men book for some time, and Marvel has begun to tease what's coming next; a period called "Destiny of X," which is being teased with a line of dialogue from the mutant precog Destiny. "There is no 'The' future," she observes in the quote. "There is no Destiny." Little is known about the upcoming "Destiny of X" era, but Marvel's been clear it involves a number of entirely new comic books.

Speaking to AiPT!, the X-Office's Lauren Amaro - one of the assistant editors on the X-Men line - summed up her current role. "I work on Inferno, which we just sent the last issue of to press last week," she explained, "X-Men, Immortal X-Men, Sabretooth, Marauders, X-Men Unlimited, and a couple of other cool projects coming soon to a local comic shop near you." The most interesting title in her list is, of course, Immortal X-Men - a book that doesn't exist, and hasn't been announced.

There's certainly a sense in which the adjective "Immortal" perfectly fits the modern X-Men. The X-Men have conquered death by synergizing mutant powers and Cerebro technology, meaning the millions of deceased mutants are gradually being resurrected. Death has always been something of a revolving door for the X-Men, but now mutants can come back from the dead mere moments after they were killed, meaning they really are functionally immortal. Gerry Duggan's current X-Men series - another title Amaro is working on - currently seems to be telling the story of how humanity learns about the X-Men's Resurrection Protocols, and Immortal X-Men could well spin off from that. Alternatively, the upcoming "Destiny of X" era appears to be implying a degree of knowledge of the future - or of futures, rather - given the nature of Destiny's cryptic comment. That means the X-Men books could well branch out to affect alternate future timelines, with familiar faces still alive millions of years from now.

Marvel has promised some major "Destiny of X" announcements in the next few weeks, so hopefully it won't be long before more is revealed. The very fact Amaro seemingly slipped and mentioned Immortal X-Men suggests it's pretty imminent, perhaps more so than some of the other titles the various editors were reluctant to announce. It's going to be exciting to find out just what Immortal X-Men really is all about.
