Fans of She-Hulk will certainly be letting out a breath of relief at Marvel Comics’ newest preview. The lawyer-turned superhero cousin of Bruce Banner has been a consistent recurring character in Marvel’s canon for years, and her return in The Immortal She-Hulk #1 is sure to be an exciting development for the character.

With Jennifer Walters’ death in Marvel’s recent Empyre series, it seemed like the character was officially down for the count. After all, being murdered and then having your body hijacked by alien plant people isn’t something your average person just bounces back from. The character was out for most of Empyre as other heroes battled a world-wide invasion by the creeping menace of the Cotati. Luckily for fans of She-Hulk, Jennifer Walters isn’t your average person. The classic character, who was first introduced in 1980, will be returning to comics sooner than expected in her own story.

In Marvel Comics' recently released preview of The Immortal She-Hulk #1, we see Jennifer Walter’s waking up in a hospital and quickly going green and mean on the nearest doctors, throwing aside the bed and snatching a man by the throat. In Jon Davis-Hunt’s deceptively simple art style, we are treated to a glimpse of the story to come. In one panel, we see She-Hulk standing in the middle of the detritus of a concrete building. She stares down at the body of a bleeding man with another hero beside her - a silent Wolverine, in a surprise appearance. Another page shows Jennifer standing, in a hospital gown, in the middle of a broken cityscape, buildings crumbling around her, with something more-than-a-little ominous hovering in the orange sky overhead.

Marvel has teased a “horrifying stand-alone tale” with The Immortal She-Hulk and the preview certainly looks horrifying enough. The destroyed city and eerie storm is an enticing glimpse of the story, that simultaneously gives away no clues as to what readers may be in for. Equally interesting is the hints that She-Hulk's gamma mutation will come into play in a new way. How exactly Marvel intends to use her gamma-powers or apply the “IMMORTAL treatment” remains to be seen, but it’s certain to pique the interest of new and old fans alike.

The Immortal She-Hulk #1 is written by Al Ewing, with art Jon Davis-Hunt and cover by Joe Bennett. You can pick your copy up when it hits shelves on September 23, 2020.
