The ad campaign for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming WWII “masterpiece” (his words, not mine), entitled Inglourious Basterds, has already begun to gear up, even though the movie is still three months away from release.

The character-centric Basterd posters in particular have been a pretty genius move on The Weinstein Company’s part, as it gives us sneak peeks at the specific characters so that we have an idea of them long before we even get to see the actual movie; we can now say – “Oh look, there’s that Basterd from that poster!”

Today we have a slew of new images from the film to add to our “reasons for anticipation” list. Most of them are close-ups of different character’s faces, with a few holding guns (looking badass doing it!) and a couple more showing location shots. Screen Rant has them all – please, give them a look:

Quentin Tarantino, the cinephile…

… he really is.

Tarantino had me at “Inglourious” with this one, but it’s always nice to get more stuff to tide us over until the actual release of the movie. I particularly like the Fassbender “huge gun” image (ooh, did that sound right?…) and the second-to-last location shot above.

These images are a good mixed bag of what we can expect from this project, well… excluding the dialogue, of course. It’s looking likely that it will play both sides of the fence (as most of his films do): It’ll be a purely entertaining movie for those just after that, but also a lot of really well-thought out details and throwbacks to films from the past (of which Tarantino is obviously a fan).

We will see how Inglorious Basterds is received at the Cannes Film Festival next week, where it is playing in competition for the prestigious Palm d’Or award (which Tarantino’s last movie, Death Proof, was also up for – and should have won if you ask me! Well, if Zodiac hadn”t been in the running too, that is). I don’t think it will win, but I do think it will be received more favorably than Death Proof was.

What are your thoughts on these Inglourious images? Isn’t Basterds shaping up to be a real treat of a movie?

Inglourious Basterds is set to open on August 19, 2009.
