A deep dive into a unique fantasy world told in an even more unique style is coming to life in the text-free miniseries Step by Bloody Step announced by Image Comics. The Spawn publisher is releasing the series in partnership with Editions Dupuis with an award-nominated creative team at the helm. The bittersweet fantasy opus begins this February and promises to captivate fans from around the world.

Step by Bloody Step features the creative team of Grand Prix and multiple Eisner award-nominee Si Spurrier, the same mind behind the X-Men series Way of X for Marvel Comics. Spurrier is teaming back up with fellow Coda alum Matias Bergara with Supergirl’s Matheus Lopes along for the ride as well. Together, they will create a unique series that will have no text, dialogue or otherwise, and will tell a complete fantasy story through the stunning imagery alone.

The story of the new Image Comics series Step by Bloody Step will throw fans into a fantasy world following two characters finding their way together. An armored giant and a helpless child cross an incredible world filled with beasts, bandits, and deadly threats of the established civilization. If the two stop walking and refuse to continue on their quest, the Earth itself will force them onward. The child and her guardian have no words, no memory, and no answers, the only thing both of them have for sure is each other.

We set our sights on nothing less than a step-change in fantasy comics,” said Spurrier in an interview released by Image Comics announcing the new series, “Step by Bloody Step resounds with all the elements I love most — magic, mystery, monstrosity and the bond between two lost souls.” While Spurrier is excited about the upcoming series in regard to the subject matter, he also expressed passion for the style in which the story will be told. “[A]bove all it’s an opportunity for Bergara and Lopes to shatter your senses with peerless storytelling spectacle and raw emotion.” And Spurrier isn’t alone, Burgara also spoke on the upcoming task at hand, “For the first time in my career, I can indulge myself in the very challenging task of telling a story purely through images.

With its initial release in the United States for English-speaking audiences, Step by Bloody Step will also be released in France with the altered title Saison de Sang. Even with the change in title, the series is perfect for readers of every language. Even before its release, comic creators are already singing series’ praises, with kind words from the likes of Immortal Hulk’s Al Ewing and X-Men’s Gerry Duggan, encouraging readers to check it out. Image ComicsStep by Bloody Step will be available in comic book shops and across digital platforms on Wednesday, February 23.
