When it comes to James Bond, some actors just seem made for the role. Many an argument has been had over who the best Bond was, and every time a new actor sips a martini discussions almost immediately shift to who should be the next to suit up for MI-6. In case you've missed it, one of the more widely talked-about potential candidates is none other than Idris Elba.
Unfortunately for fans who support Elba's casting, it doesn't seem likely to happen. The actor himself has confirmed that there have been no talks about him taking over the role, and that he might not be up for taking it even if he was approached.
Appearing on Good Morning America, Elba discussed the rumor that he would be the next Bond and called it “the wildest rumor in the world.” He explained to host Michael Strahan that he's never been approached for the part at all, saying:
"I keep saying if it were to happen it would be the will of a nation because there hasn’t been any talks between me and the studio about any of that."
Of course, that doesn't mean that he wouldn't take the role if he was offered, right? Sadly, those who were prepared to see him as part of Her Majesty's Secret Service will likely be disappointed as he might not even want to play the character. He explained his reasoning for not wanting to tackle the role, though part of his explanation may have been a bit tongue-in-cheek. As he told Strahan:
“But if I’m really honest man, I think I’m too old for that. Running around in cars and ladies and martinis, who wants to do that? Sounds terrible.”
Playing James Bond can be very stressful, as current Bond actor Daniel Craig can attest. Elba has had his share of action in films, though, and certainly doesn't play a pencil-pusher on Luther either. If he doesn't feel that the role is right for him, however, then that's likely all that there is to it... assuming that the filmmakers were ever considering approaching him at all.
There's still a lot of speculation about what will happen with the Bond franchise next, since no new actor has been announced for the role and it's unclear if Craig will return. At the moment, the next film in the franchise doesn't even have a director lined up. Regardless of what happens, though, it's most likely going to happen without Idris Elba in the role.
James Bond 25 (official title TBA) is currently without an official release date.
