It seems like just about every movie now is a remake or reboot of something. That isn't always a bad thing, as some of those remakes and reboots have been pretty great (such as Mad Max Fury Road). It does beg the question though of if everything needs to be remade.

While a clever reboot can breathe new life into a fading franchise, some movies are probably better left alone. Even more so, the legendary characters that those movies launched into movie history. With the current debate of who should be the next James Bond, and who could replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, some characters are too synonymous with their actors to ever recast.

Indiana Jones — Indiana Jones Franchise

Rumors of rebooting or recasting the Indiana Jones series have been circling for years, with several actors supposedly attached to be taking up the whip. While several of the big names mentioned could undoubtedly do a good job with the role, Harrison Ford is just too good in it.

As Solo's mixed reception proved, regardless of how good a recast actor does they will always have to live up to Harrison Ford. Ford played the daring archaeologist so well that it would be hard to see anyone else in the brown fedora. Plus, for the most part, the original movies still hold up today, and Ford is already returning for a fifth movie soon. Lucasfilm has stated that they have no intention of ever recasting Indy, so perhaps Ford will stay the only Indiana Jones.

Ace Ventura — Ace Ventura Series

While not quite the cultural phenomenon that Indiana Jones is, Ace Ventura is a comedy favorite that helped to elevate Jim Carrey into the spotlight. While the pet detective premise has more to offer, Ventura himself is likely something that can never be replicated.

Carrey played the part with so much of his trademark physicality and unhinged charm that placing anyone else in the role would be setting them up to fail. All of Jim Carrey's best characters are inherently tied to his unique brand of humor, so any actor who steps into his shoes would have to choose between either taking a completely new route with it or falling into just doing an impression of the original.

Ellis "Red" Redding — The Shawshank Redemption

Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption is not only arguably the best Stephen King film adaptation ever, but it is also often considered one of the best movies of all time. With its stellar writing, powerfully emotional story, and fantastic acting, Shawshank has endeared itself to generations of movie lovers.

One of the most famous parts of the movie is easily Morgan Freeman's performance as "Red", the best friend of Andy Dufresne and the film's narrator. Morgan Freeman brings endless prestige to all of his roles, and this might be one of his best. While he is far from the book version of Red, Morgan Freeman is someone who would be nearly impossible to replace in any role.

Charles Foster Kane — Citizen Kane

The Hall of mirrors in Citizen Kane

Orson Welles' magnum opus Citizen Kane is often called the single greatest movie ever made. While moviegoers are free to agree or disagree with that as they choose, it is hard to argue with the impact that it has made on the industry.

Welles himself played the titular Charles Foster Kane as he is remembered at each stage of his life by those who knew him. A very blatant allegory for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, Kane goes from optimistic youth to a bitter, lonely old man by the end. Since Welles wrote, directed, and played the character, it wouldn't be the same with anyone else in the role. Citizen Kane is a movie that should just stay untouched.

The T-800 — Terminator Franchise

The Terminator - The T-800 Massacres a Police Station

Ask anyone about the Terminator films and the first thing they mention will almost certainly be Arnold Schwarzenegger as the hulking T-800. His classic portrayal of the murderous cyborg from the future in the original catapulted him instantly into legend. He was so popular that he was even brought back for the sequels on the side of good.

There have been several newer models of Terminator played by different actors, but the classic T-800 has been a mainstay of the franchise from the very beginning. There have even been several canonical explanations for why the T-800 continues to look like Arnie, and for good reason. It would be hard to picture anyone else in the role.

Jules Winfield — Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is considered by many to be Quentin Tarantino's best film, with a large part due to Samuel L. Jackson's career-defining turn as the Bible-quoting hitman Jules. Jackson is equal parts cool, hilarious, and intimidating in the part. The entire cast is phenomenal, but Samuel L. Jackson has become the face of the whole film.

Jackson is so synonymous with the role and the movie that it would be out of the question to ever try and replicate what he does with it. Regardless of whether they love or hate the movie, almost everyone can quote one of his lines. Plus, no one else could have delivered the Ezekiel speech quite like Jackson. Say what one more time.

Holly Golightly — Breakfast At Tiffanys

Audrey Hepburn in and of herself is someone who can likely never be equaled. She is considered one of the greatest screen legends of all time and was a cultural icon even outside of her film roles. That said, it stands to reason that her most iconic role should be well and truly left alone.

Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's was Hepburn's defining role and the one that cemented her place in cinema history and the hearts of fans everywhere. Hepburn played her as eccentric but endearing, and naive but self-assured. She is a true movie legend that will always be Audrey Hepburn's masterpiece.

Rocky Balboa — Rocky Franchise

Sylvester Stallone has portrayed two characters that would be difficult for anyone else to step into the shoes of, but even more so than Rambo, Rocky Balboa should never be replaced. Not has Stallone played the character in every film so far, but he was the one who created Rocky in the first place.

As much as every actor makes a character their own, Rocky is entirely Stallone's creation and was made for him. To cast anyone else as the iconic boxer would almost be blasphemy. Thankfully, the Creed series has taken a great approach to continue Rocky's story by having him train the next boxing great.

Ellen Ripley — Alien Franchise

Ellen Ripley has the unique claim of being both one of the best horror movie finals girls of all time and one of the best female action heroes of all time. The original protagonist of the Alien series, Ellen Ripley is a piece of the screen legend. Sigourney Weaver made the character a relatable and capable survivor in the original film and grew her into a full-on powerhouse in the sequel.

Weaver's performance made Ripley sympathetic, kind, self-reliant, and unstoppable. She was such a well-rounded character that fans could feel for her and cheer on her badassery at the same time. There is a reason the series has mostly done prequels since she left. If anyone ever plays Ripley on screen again, it has to be Sigourney Weaver.

Darth Vader — Star Wars Franchise

Darth Vader is unquestionably one of the most iconic and enduring characters ever put to screen. His imposing form and menacing armor were a classic as soon as he stepped into the frame. There have been multiple actors to portray Vader, both physically and vocally, but the most recognizable has to be the incomparable James Earl Jones.

David Prowse's original turn in the Sith Lord's suit was equally as important, but it was Jones' legendary voice that cemented his place in fans' hearts. Many other actors have voiced Vader, most of them pretty well, but essentially every portrayal boils down to an impression of James Earl Jones' original work. Since Vader is likely to be a part of the Star Wars series for years, hopefully, Jones will too.
