Warning: contains mild spoilers for Icon & Rocket: Season One #1!

The 1990s had some interesting costume trends that should be left there, but DC has kept the best costume aspects of Milestone's duo: Icon and Rocket. As of July 2021, Icon & Rocket: Season One #1 has brought back Arnus and Raquel for a new era, but they have received a uniform update which is fitting for this modern take.

Icon and Rocket first debuted in Icon from Milestone Comics in 1993. The series - and characters - were created by the team of Dwayne McDuffie, M.D. Bright, Mike Gustovich, Steve Dutro, Rachelle Menashe, James Sherman, and Noelle Giddings. These two Milestone heroes contrasted each other in ideology, but have been a powerful duo who work well together. Now, they're back in action, ready to take on the world in updated threads.

In Icon & Rocket: Season One #1 - from Reginald Hudlin, Doug Braithwaite, Scott Hanna, and Andrew Currie - the titular pair have kept their original color schemes, but a few adjustments have been made which improve the overall look. Their newest look drops many of the outdated '90s elements in favor of a sleek, modern vibe. Many of the same cuts are present from the original Milestone costumes, but the tweaks made are definitely needed.

Icon has largely remained the same, from first ever issue to the newest iteration. He is still in a predominantly red suit with gold ringed accents and a green cape. However, his ringed centerpiece has been updated and his boots have made a big change. Icon's cape used to connect to a gold-ish ring on the center of his chest. Now, the ring has turned into a central insignia instead of a 3D connecting piece. It has a yellow center with green lines joining the broader body of green on his shoulders and neck. Icon's boots used to be shorter with a trio of dark rings around his lower legs. Now, he has long black boots that are rimmed with a thick band of gold, matching his arm bands. These boots are much sleeker than his previous ones and the gold banded trims help bring the outfit together. Icon's outfit hasn't changed drastically as there wasn't much wrong or outdated about the core design. Rocket's outfit, on the other hand, needed some work.

Rocket's original costume included a magenta headband wrapping around her forehead and a pair of superhero-typical outer trunks reminiscent of Superman. While this element continues to work for the Man of Steel, it's one that definitely should not be the norm for most superheroes. Instead of this underwear-like outerwear, Rocket sports a pair of pants in a darker hue. These appear much sleeker. The monotone color is broken up using her updated belt. Her headband's also gone, but the color accent is maintained by a pair of goggles in the same coloration. The goggles can also serve to help hide her identity, which her previous uniform didn't do much to obscure.

The worst part of Rocket's previous Milestone outfit was definitely the boob window, which thankfully has been removed in favor of a much more practical crop top. Boob windows are a severely outdated element of comic-book character design, and it's good to see Icon and Rocket has no plans to bring them back. Apart from these modern adjustments and a color variation to break up the monochrome tones of her previous top, Rocket's new costume is largely faithful to her initial appearance. She still rocks a jacket and gloves and has kept her original color scheme. The DC duo are ready to tackle their new challenges and look fantastic while doing it in future issues of Icon and Rocket.
