'Ice Age 4: Continental Drift' Trailer

Ice Age Continental Drift Trailer

Despite making over $886 million dollars worldwide, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – the third entry in the Twentieth Century Fox animated series – wasn’t exactly a critical darling on the level of, say, your average Pixar film.

Today, we have the trailer for the fourth in the series, Ice Age: Continental Drift. The film will feature the hilarious prehistoric antics of Manny (Ray Romano), Ellie (Queen Latifah), Diego (Denis Leary), Sid (John Leguizamo), and Scrat the saber-toothed squirrel, as well as new characters.

As the subtitle of the film suggests, the thrust of Continental Drift is about the separation of the continents -- the impetus of which (apparently) was Scrat's insatiable appetite for acorns – and how that affects our band of Ice Age heroes in very sad but ultimately uplifting ways.

Check out the trailer below:

After Manny, Diego, and Sid are separated from Ellie and Peaches (Manny and Ellie's teenage daughter, played by Keke Palmer), they cross paths with pirates, Sid's long lost family, and Shira, a saber-toothed tiger love interest for Diego (played by Jennifer Lopez) - All in an effort to get back home!

Scrat in Ice Age 4

It's hard to watch the trailer and not feel as though the series is running out of steam. While the first film was enjoyed by many – children, adults, and critics alike – the sequels have thus far received mixed reviews. Perhaps this fourth film will bring some magic back to the series, but it's also one of the least interesting looking animated films of the year next to projects like Brave, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Frankenweenie, Paranorman, and Genndy Tartakovsky's Hotel Transylvania.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Ice Age sequel entirely about Scrat's Loony Tunes-esque exploits, and I doubt I'm alone in that. Ah, well. Maybe Ice Age 5?

Are you guys looking forward to the fourth Ice Age? Or was three helpings already too many? Let us know in the comments.

Ice Age: Continental Drift, directed by Carlos Saldanha and Chris Wedge, hits theaters July 13th, 2012.
