I Know What You Did Last Summer: What The Cast Looks Like Now

For a lot of people in-tune with pop culture, 1997 was an absolute banner year for memorable things. That year, for whatever reason, seemed to define an entire generation or at least give us a touchstone for what the late nineties were.

It's hard to believe it's been twenty years since we first got "Mmmbop" stuck in our heads, learned what to do after getting knocked down after a whiskey/vodka/lager/cider drink, and were just becoming obsessed with that totally cool new band that no one was sick of: Smash Mouth.

In terms of film, 1997 had us in theaters more than we'd like to admit with the likes of Batman & Robin, Face/Off, Titanic,  Men in Black, and The Fifth Element just to name a few. And the fall that year kept the hits coming with the first installment to the teen slasher flick I Know What You Did Last Summer just in time for Halloween.

The film that caused everyone to be wary of any murderous hook-wielding fisherman (after we had just learned to love again!) and scared the slickers off audiences everywhere. It also introduced most people to some beloved faces that are still making TV and films to this day.

Here's What The Cast Of I Know What You Did Last Summer Looks Like Now.

15 Freddie Prinze Jr.

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Freddie Prinze Jr

Teen heartthrob Freddie Prinze Jr. navigated the waters of Hollywood to become adult heartthrob Freddie Prinze Jr.

While many of the cast members surely have strong memories surrounding film, Prinze and his I Know What You Did Last Summer co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar (more on her shortly!) came out of it in love. The two were married in 2002 and have two children.

In the years since, Prinze has continued to act (notably as Fred in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies), was involved with the WWE for a while, and has made a respectable career in voice-over work.

He often lends his voice to Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, voiced Kanan Jarrus on Star Wars: Rebels, and even voices a few characters in the Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Paragon Lost video games.

14 Sarah Michelle Gellar

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Sarah Michelle Gellar

As you know from the previous entry, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. got together during the filming of I Know What You Did Last Summer and were married in 2002.

In the film, Gellar played beauty queen and hometown hero, Helen Shivers. She met her end during the events of the film shortly after the fisherman got his hook into Helen's sister.

She and her husband seem to have some similar careers having both been in the Scooby-Doo films and lent her voice to Robot Chicken and Star Wars: Rebels. She also reprised the role of Kathryn Merteuil in a 2016 TV pilot for a sequel series to Cruel Intentions.

And, of course, there's Gellar's amazing work for years as the titular slayer on the ultra-popular TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

13 Ryan Phillippe

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Ryan Phillippe

Ryan Phillippe might even look better today than he did in 1997 - how is that fair?!

Phillippe's character, Barry Cox, was a classic alpha male who tried to intimidate answers out of people. As you can probably guess, based on every other horror movie, alpha males rarely make it out alive and Barry was no exception, having been slashed to bits by the fisherman and then placed on ice.

Currently, Ryan Phillippe stars in and produces Shooter on the USA Network. The show, based on the 2007 film of the same name that starred Mark Wahlberg, follows Bob Lee Swagger (played by Phillippe this time around), a highly trained Force Recon Marine and MARSOC CSO Scout Sniper.

12 Johnny Galecki

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Johnny Galecki

With only a small supporting role in the original film, it may come as a surprise that Johnny Galecki is surely the most successful actor to come out of the film.

In IKWYDLS (what an unruly acronym!), Galecki played townie Max Neurick who the main group (and we, as the audience) suspected had something to do with the ominous notes left for them. Those suspicions were soon quelled when the fisherman was able to sneak up on and murdered Max.

Before the film, Galecki was already a fairly well-known actor, having played David Healy in the ABC sitcom Roseanne for five years. He's since become one of the undisputed kings of syndicated sitcom television with his role as Dr. Leonard Hofstadter in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory.

11 Bridgette Wilson

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Bridgette Wilson

Bridgette Wilson played Elsa Shivers, the elder sister of Helen. Elsa meets her end at the hands-- or let's say hook-- of the fisherman when Helen runs to her family's store to hide from the killer. Elsa doesn't believe Helen about the killer but is finally convinced once, well, once she's attacked by the murderous sailor.

Wilson is a former Miss Teen USA, having won in 1990 and became an actor soon after. She was one of the go-to actresses in a lot of movies in the '90s and early 2000s. Most will know her for her role as Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat and Veronica Vaughn in the Adam Sandler comedy, Billy Madison. Her last film, at the time this list was written, was 2008's Phantom Punch.

In 2000, she married professional tennis player Pete Sampras.

10 Jennifer Love Hewitt

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Jennifer Love Hewitt

As you've likely noticed, the majority of the cast of every I Know What You Did Last Summer somehow doesn't ever seem to age. There might be some sort of fountain of youth scenario in getting stalked by a murderous fisherman with a hook. Jennifer Love Hewitt starred as Julie James in the original film and its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

Her character was the only one to show any amount of conflict with dumping a recently killed victim and somehow became the main target for the fisherman. She was attacked at the end of the second film and audiences are still unclear if she survived.

Since her slasher film days, Hewitt got married, had some kids, and has continued to act in many TV shows and movies. She's even directed some of her episodes of Ghost Whisperer and The Client List.

9 Anne Heche

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Anne Heche

Anne Heche's involvement in I Know What You Did Last Summer is something of a red herring plot point. The main group of kids do some research of who they may have hit with their card and wrongly conclude the killer was a boy named David Egan. They track down his sister (played by Heche) who sheds some light on his death. It turns out that the David was killed by Ben Willis (the fisherman) who was the father of David's deceased fiancée.

Heche has had a very successful career in both television and film and continues to work to this day. You can see her in the lead role of the upcoming NBC series The Brave or as Joyce Dahmer in 2017's My Friend Dahmer.

8 Jack Black

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Jack Black

A lot of familiar faces returned for the 1998 follow-up, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer but there was an even more familiar face to join the cast. Sort of.

Comedian/musician/actor and all around bad-ass rocker Jack Black made an un-credited appearance in the sequel as the dread-locked weed-obsessed pool boy on the island resort the group traveled to,

As with a lot of Black's roles in the '90s, Titus Telesco is portrayed as a mostly bumbling character who wasn't well-liked by others in the film and-- despite his best efforts-- met his end when he was impaled with a pair of garden shears.

Black has, of course, continued his career as 50% of the group Tenacious D and stretched his acting legs into some decent roles over the years. Recently, he's been the voice of Po in the Kung Fu Panda series and will appear in the upcoming Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

7 Brandy

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Brandy

Brandy Norwood is probably more recognizable by her simple mononymous title: Brandy. The teen sensation was absolutely everywhere in the '90s and her starring role on the UPN sitcom Moesha has a lot to do with that.

She played Karla Wilson in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, whose incorrect trivia answer "won" the group the trip to the Bahamas. It's later revealed that it was all a set-up (for whatever reason) to get the group to the island for some beach-side murderin'. In a rare deviation from most of the attacks in the film series, Brandy's character actually makes it out of her film alive.

Since the movie (and the '90s) Brandy has continued her music career, appeared on quite a few TV shows, and spent some time as a reality TV star.

6 Mekhi Phifer

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Mekhi Phifer

1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer also starred actor Mekhi Phifer who played Tyrell Martin. Surely you can guess by now-- based on almost every character on this list-- that Martin didn't have a very good Caribbean vacation and was killed by the hook-wielding fisherman.

Phifer has had an extremely successful career in both TV and film. He played Dr. Greg Pratt on NBC's long-running medical drama ER, Agent Ben Reynolds on Fox's Lie To Me, and about a dozen episodes of Torchwood, where he played Agent Rex Matheson.

Keeping with that highly-trained government agent type character, he also played Max in the The Divergent Series. Most will also remember that Phifer played David "Future" Porter in Eminem's 2002 film 8 Mile.

5 Jennifer Esposito

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Jennifer Esposito

Nancy the bartender is a character some may not remember from 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer but she was played by accomplished actor Jennifer Esposito. Nancy met her end-- here we go again-- at the hands of the fisherman.

Much to the chagrin of any murderous raincoat-wearing psycho running amok in a vacation destination, Esposito went on to perform in movies the likes of Crash, Summer of Sam, Don't Say a Word, and Welcome to Collinwood. She's also been a familiar face on television shows like Spin City, Related, Samantha Who?, Blue Bloods, and Mistresses.

Most recently, Esposito had a supporting role on Showtime's The Affair and joined the cast of CBS's hit series NCIS in a main role as Special Agent Alexandra Quinn.

4 John Hawkes

I Know What You Did Last Summer - john hawkes

There may be a lot people have forgotten about in the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer but its cast had quite a few notable names in addition to the returning cast members lucky enough to make it out of the first film. Among those were the short-lived (in this film, anyway) character Dave, played by John Hawkes. One of the first hook-related deaths in the sequel is still quite a distinction to be proud of.

Hawkes made a name for himself as Sol Star on the HBO series Deadwood and Dustin Powers on the hilarious series Eastbound & Down.

Hawkes went on to be nominated for over 20 awards for his role in 2012's The Sessions and some may recognize him as one of the jurors in the hilarious Inside Amy Schumer parody episode of 12 Angry Men.

3 Matthew Settle

I Know What You Did Last Summer - matthew settle

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was the major motion picture debut for actor Matthew Settle, who played Will Benson. The events of the film reveal that Benson was actually the son of the killer fisherman and infiltrated the group for some murderous revenge.

Settle has continued to work in the roughly two decades from his film debut, having notable roles as Captain Ronald Speirs on the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers and on the CW teen drama series Gossip Girl playing Rufus Humphrey.

He also has a resume full of appearances on shows like ER, The Practice, Brothers and Sisters, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Theater fans will surely know of his stint taking up the mantle of the smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn for a limited engagement of Chicago.

2 Torrey DeVitto

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Torrey DeVitto

Actress Torrey DeVitto has the distinction of being on this list for being the only mention of the direct-to-video third and final installment of the film series, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.

The rather forgettable film actually involves the fisherman killer having come back from the dead. DeVitto was in good company with most of the other actors in the film series, having played yet another victim - this one stabbed in the stomach and thrown over a balcony.

DeVitto has since made a name for herself with recurring roles on Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill, The Vampire Diaries, and Army Wives. You can see her recently playing Dr. Natalie Manning on the three interconnected series Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., and Chicago P.D.

1 Muse Watson

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Muse Watson

Of course we have to end this list with the only character to make it into all three films despite technically being dead for the last. The murderous hook-handed fisherman known as Ben Willis in the films was played by actor Muse Watson. It'd be rather redundant to re-hash his role in each and every movie so let's leave the description of his role as "primary antagonist."

Watson is a veteran actor with nearly 100 television and film credits starting all the way back in 1989.

Since the film series, he's kept working having two particularly stand-out roles on television. He played Special Agent-in-Charge Mike Franks on NCIS and Charles Westmoreland in 19 episodes of the Fox mega-hit, Prison Break.

Fans of his grizzled good looks can see him as Detective Frank McGraw in the first episode of the upcoming crime series Mindhunter.
