Following a new set of characters, I Know What You Did Last Summer sees a group of teenagers hit someone with their car the night of their high school graduation party. Worried about how the consequences will affect them and their future (with college admissions on the horizon), the friends decide to dispose of the body, keeping the events of the tragedy a secret between them. A year later, they begin receiving text messages and threats from an unknown figure who knows a bit too much about them, their inner lives, and the death they tried to cover up the summer before.
The first four episodes of I Know What You Did Last Summer will be released to Amazon Prime Video at 12:00am midnight GMT on October 15, 2021. That’s 8:00pm ET on Thursday, October 14. No matter the time zone, however, all four episodes of the series will be available to stream on the Friday of October 15. Following the release of the first half of season 1, Amazon will drop one episode of the horror series on a weekly basis, with the season 1 finale releasing on November 12. I Know What You Did Last Summer will have a total of eight episodes, with the remaining four episodes streaming every Friday beginning at 12:00am GMT on Amazon.
Unlike Netflix, however, Amazon has been moving away from the binge model, leaning more heavily into doing weekly episodic releases. The same goes for I Know What You Did Last Summer. The hope is that, after seeing where the story goes after four episodes, the cliffhanger at the end of the fourth episode will keep viewers coming back to see what will happen to the characters and who the killer turns out to be. Considering the updated horror series has a big cast and plenty of mysteries to spare, it’s possible Amazon will renew the show for season 2 (though it might all depend on how it’s critically received and how many people watch it). The weekly release schedule could help.
I Know What You Did Last Summer joins a slew of Amazon original series, including The Boys and The Wilds. With eight episodes in total, I Know What You Did Last Summer has plenty of time to set up its story, hopefully taking its audience on a horror-filled ride that will likely set the series apart from its film predecessors.
