Warning: This post contains spoilers for I Know What You Did Last Summer season 1, episode 5.
I Know What You Did Last Summer season 1’s episode 5 saw new information emerge — namely, there were clues that suggested Clara could be Alison and Lennon’s mother. At the start of season 1, viewers learned that Alison and Lennon’s mother died by suicide years prior to where the story picks up in I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Despite appearing on occasion, Clara has largely kept to the shadows, remaining a mysterious figure who exists on the outskirts of Wai Huna’s community. While I Know What You Did Last Summer season 1’s episode four revealed Clara and Bruce knew each other, a fact he kept hidden from Alison, episode five expanded upon her backstory. Clara’s family was allegedly a cult who all died (when and how remains unclear). And not only did she know Bruce, but Alison discovers they were married after finding an album with several photos of the two of them together at their wedding ceremony.
While the Amazon series has yet to confirm Clara is the twins’ mother, flashbacks to the night of the graduation party hint that Bruce and Lennon were in on a secret Alison had yet to uncover. That secret seems to be connected to Clara, who was heavily focused on during episode 5. I Know What You Did Last Summer’s series premiere alluded a lot to Alison and Lennon’s unidentified mother, but it’s only after Alison reveals that only their mother loved her (as opposed to her sister and father) that Lennon posits to Bruce about telling her the truth. What that truth is remains elusive, but it can’t be a coincidence that Lennon would bring it up right after Alison’s admission.
What’s more, Clara is the one who found and kept hold of Lennon’s body for a while and her reaction and behavior towards her seemed more loving than that of an old girlfriend of Bruce’s. It’s possible Clara had to leave her family behind because of the cult aspect of her life — I Know What You Did Last Summer shows all their destroyed homes — and so Bruce made up the story about her death to tell his daughters to protect them. Lennon likely found out about it, but Alison was very much in the dark. Alison still manages to find out about Clara and Bruce despite the fact he lied to his daughter about her.
Clara being the twins’ mother would also explain why Bruce is not bothered about keeping yet another secret. Since discussing Alison and Lennon’s mother was a central part of their conflict the night the latter died, all evidence seems to point to Clara being the mystery maternal figure in I Know What You Did Last Summer. There are still a lot of unknown factors and Bruce’s secret might not have anything to do with Alison and Lennon’s mother at all. Either way, there’s certainly more to Clara than meets the eye and Alison confronting Bruce about his marriage could be the gateway toward learning more and unraveling the mystery still present in I Know What You Did Last Summer.
