Netflix has canceled its coming-of-age drama series I Am Not Okay With This after one season. The show, which starred Sophia Lillis (Sharp Objects, It), premiered on Netflix in late-February of this year to generally positive reviews. Its lone season was a swift one -- just seven episodes, all of which ran roughly 30-minutes in length -- making it an accessible and consumable binge for audiences. It also had a relatively convenient release, likely seeing a boost in viewership and popularity at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Per Deadline, that convenience was shortlived: the show, along with its fellow YA drama, The Society, has been canceled by the streaming giant today due to coronavirus-related production concerns. According to Deadline's sources, "uncertainty around production dates... coupled with unexpected budget increases due to COVID led to the decisions on The Society and I Am Not Okay With This." Netflix's official statement can be read below:
"We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This... We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators, including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world."
Co-created by Entwistle and Hall, and based on Charles Forsman's graphic novel of the same name, I Am Not Okay With This starred Sophia Lillis as a young teenage girl navigating high school, the bullies, the complicated nature of her family, her budding adolescence, and, on top of all that, superpowers. At first, she's unable to control these powers. Upon feeling frustrated, she cracks the wall in her room; when overwhelmed at the grocery store, she causes food to fly off of the shelves. With time, she is able to command the abilities and use them to her benefit... or for other's demise. The show also starred Wyat Oleff, Sofia Bryant, Aidan Wojtak-Hissong, Richard Ellis, and Kathleen Rose Perkins.
