James Gunn had an easy-to-miss cameo in I Am Groot. Told in the format of three-minute shorts, I Am Groot is the first of its kind for the MCU. Centered on Vin Diesel’s Guardians of the Galaxy character, the series stands out as the MCU’s first attempt to produce content aimed specifically at younger audiences.

Considering that Gunn directed the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and co-wrote the stories, it’s not surprising that he’s had a heavy hand in how the Guardians are utilized outside the three films. Over the years, several of the team’s members have been featured prominently in other projects, with the director providing guidance in regards to how the Guardians should be handled. The same was the case with I Am Groot, which is the first MCU installment where one of the Guardians is the central character. He’s also attached to the show as one of its executive producers.

In addition to Gunn’s behind-the-scenes role with I Am Groot, Gunn had a voiceover cameo in one of the five shorts. In “Groot’s Pursuit”, Vin Diesel's Baby Groot wrapped a smartwatch around his head in an effort to use it as a flashlight while walking around in the dark. When it suddenly went off, Groot slapped it several times to turn it back on, which caused the smartwatch to speak several lines associated with different settings, including “you have walked 800 steps” and “know your horoscope”. Apparently, this dialogue was spoken by James Gunn in a cameo.

Has James Gunn Done Other Cameos?

I am Groot James Gunn Cameo

While Gunn found room for cameos for several members of his family in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he thus far hasn’t had a single cameo in Marvel’s movies. But interestingly, his role in I Am Groot isn’t altogether new for the director. Recently, the Guardians of the Galaxy director had a cameo in the season 3 premiere of HBO Max’s Harley Quinn show where he actually voiced himself in scenes with Harley Quinn and Clayface. His involvement was fitting, especially since Gunn directed The Suicide Squad (which included Harley Quinn). Now, the director has cameoed in two animated shows.

Even though Gunn has confirmed that the Guardians’ MCU stories will be finished with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a chance could soon come for a third voiceover cameo. After all, it’s already been confirmed that Disney+’s I Am Groot will be back with a second season which will most likely continue the misadventures of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s Baby Groot. Exactly when it’ll release is unclear, but I Am Groot season 2 could arrive as early as 2023.
