With Hyrule Warrior: Age of Calamity recently receiving an expansion pass, it is a great moment to get back to it. One of the main aspects of the game is boss fights and some of them can often get very tricky. Specifically, one of the most challenging bosses that players will have to face frequently is the Stone Talus.

The Stone Talus, originating from Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, remains equally strong in Hyrule Warriors. Since players encounter this boss multiple times throughout the story, it can be extremely helpful to know that there are some tricks to make these fights a bit easier.

Dodge

Dodging is a player's best ally in these fights. The Stone Talus has powerful but slow attacks, which makes blocking a less efficient option. Due to its slow attacks, dodging is easier compared to other enemies. A good strategy is to aim for perfect dodges and follow them up with a flurry rush, which significantly damages its defense. Timing is key in this fight and the slow movement of the Stone Talus makes dodging a great option.

Jump on it

The Talus's slow attacks also leave it vulnerable for a few seconds after striking. By getting close and waiting for it to attack, the player can take advantage of its slow recovery. The Talus leans in front, almost hugging the ground, which gives the player a perfect opportunity to jump on top of it and hit its weak spot: the tiny black rock. Damaging it, even with normal attacks, can help break the Talus' armor faster.

Runes

One of the best ways to break its defense is to use runes and specifically remote bombs. It is important to note that, while all characters can use runes, the remote bombs are only accessible to Link. They can be used by pressing the R button during battle, followed by the left directional button to select the bombs. Whenever they are not on cooldown, they should be used as they are extremely effective.

Positioning

When there are two Taluses, positioning is key. Getting caught between them puts the player at a great disadvantage and can probably lead to defeat as it is hard to dodge both their attacks at the same time. Even though some attacks can hit both of them, it simply is not worth the risk of getting so close.

Circling around the area and hitting the one that gets closer is a solid strategy that minimizes the risk of getting ganked by both.

Time

It is essential to always keep an eye on the time. The 10 minutes provided can be more than enough if the player uses the right tactics. However, since it is a rather slow fight with a lot of back and forth, it can be easy to get distracted and even take it too slow. Running out of time, of course, leads to defeat, so it is recommended to keep an eye on the timer and adjust the pace of the fight based on it.

One At A Time

When faced with two Taluses, it is extremely important to only focus on one at a time. Trying to damage them both can get too risky since the player has to get very close. At the same time, changing focus throughout the fight can really stall things out, thus making time an issue. Further to that, with the first Talus dead, the second one becomes much easier to kill despite being in full health.

Camera Lock

Staying locked on one Talus during most of the fight can be dangerous when there is a second one roaming around. It is easy to get too focused on the first one and lose sight of the second one. This is one of the most common mistakes that players make. Despite the Taluses being slow, their movement should not be underestimated. Having the camera unlocked gives the player much more information, and thus control over the fight.

Normal Attacks

While normal attacks might seem to get some damage through, it is often not worth the risk for getting too close to the Talus. Inflicting damage with remote bombs and flurry attacks is far more efficient than hitting it with normal attacks which give it a chance to strike back. Of course, this changes when the player gets on top of the Talus where normal attacks are a solid option for breaking its defenses, especially when the player is high-leveled. However, in any other case, they are high-risk low-reward moves.

Patience

Getting the extra attack after a combo can sometimes seem extremely tempting, but it is something that should be avoided. The risk for just one extra attack is usually not worth it and the player is better off by playing it safe.

Since the time is more than enough to finish the fight, getting greedy for just one extra smash is simply not worth it. Patience and slow play are key when fighting a Talus.

Weak-Point Smash

After using bombs, flurry attacks, and jumping on it, the talus' defense will eventually break. Capitalizing on this opportunity by using a weak-point smash is the final necessary step. Keep an eye on its defense bar and start closing the distance when it gets low enough. Being ready and close to it when its defense breaks gives the player the prompt of a weak-point smash finisher to win the fight.
