In a fun and original de-make, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is reimagined as a Game Boy Color title. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was only just released last week on the Nintendo Switch, but it has already broken records, becoming the best-selling Dynasty Warriors game ever. Coupling the fast paced hack and slash gameplay famous in the Musuo genre with the compelling narratives of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has given fans of the Zelda series a welcome opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s breath-taking rendition of Hyrule, and the chance to experience the Great Calamity first hand.
The Legend of Zelda has been around for over three decades now, with games spanning across each Nintendo platform. From the top down 2D adventures of the mid-1980s to the open world epic of 2017’s Breath of the Wild, Link and Zelda have battled their way through innumerable Bokoblin hordes (and multiple reincarnations of Ganon) with every generation since its inception. And while many gaming fans are constantly looking forward for the next step up in graphics and game immersion, some like to bring a nostalgic element to their fan tributes instead.
One gaming channel has taken fans of The Legend of Zelda on a trip down memory lane by reimagining Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity as a Game Boy Color title. Borrowing the opening sequence from the latest Hylian release, Nintendo Wire has created the cinematic assault on Hyrule Castle in the graphics and style of the handheld gaming console made famous in the '90s. Even the music has been recreated to emulate the era of the Game Boy color, with the 8-bit chiptune music reverberating over the action. After the initial cutscene ends, the real fight begins. As in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Link becomes a controllable force of power as he slashes through the enemy foes advancing on Hyrule Castle, only this time he is a concoction of 2D pixels on a very angular battleground.
The video does not go any further into the story with its fun reimagining of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Instead fans are left with this small link to the past as a playful reminder of times gone by. The Game Boy era is still held in high regard amongst gamers - Nintendo even dedicated a Spirit Board event to it on Smash Bros. Ultimate recently, in which the Wind Fish and Nayru from the Zelda series featured.
There is no doubt that the graphics, storytelling, and music have vastly improved in videogames in the years since the Game Boy Color was first released. Regardless, this clever de-make puts an enjoyable twist on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity which is sure to be appreciated by longstanding fans of Nintendo and The Legend of Zelda.
