A Hunt: Showdown player has discovered a Shrek Easter egg in the game's newest map: a full replica of the ogre's swamp home. Hunt: Showdown is an online first-person shooter with PvPvE gameplay where players take down nightmarish monsters, though not the fairytale kind seen in the popular Shrek movies.

Hunt: Showdown's latest map is the third to come to the game, and is currently running on the PC test server as of July 9. Titled "DeSalle," the map introduces an Old West vibe to the shooter, complete with a saloon and farm. Developer Crytek has announced DeSalle will be releasing in full later this summer for both PC and consoles, though an exact date has yet to be revealed. Hunt: Showdown is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

While the game often strays from realism into the realm of monsters, finding an homage to Shrek has come as a surprise to lots of Hunt: Showdown fans. Reddit user and gamer SkiFrankie shared their discovery online, posting an in-game photo that shows off a full video game rendition of Shrek's swamp home as featured in the Dreamworks movies. According to OP, players will be able to find Shrek's swamp house somewhere in the bottom left of Hunt: Showdown's DeSalle map should they want to see it for themselves.

Hunt: Showdown Player Finds Shrek's Swamp In New Map

The Hunt: Showdown development team at Crytek has done a very good job of recreating Shrek's homestead, even going so far as to include what appears to be his outhouse toilet, which can be spotted up the stairs to the left of the property. While Shrek himself has yet to make an appearance, it's a much-appreciated nod to the movies which is already seeing a lot of attention online. Fans will have to keep an eye on the developer's upcoming Crysis 2 and 3 remasters just in case there are any more Shrek Easter eggs to come from the company.

Shrek and his friends are no strangers to the world of video games, having appeared in many official releases over the years ranging from movie tie-in adventures to kart racers and educational spin-offs. As well as officially licensed games, Shrek has become a character regularly used by the modding community. Thanks to Shrek's popularity within meme culture, the ogre's familiar green face has shown up in games like the Resident Evil 2 remake and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice thanks to mods, and Shrek has appeared in Legend of Zelda titles too. While Crytek hasn't explained its Hunt: Showdown reference quite yet, it's definitely brought some joy to the players who've discovered it.
