Mockingjay Director Talks the Future of the Hunger Games Franchise

Katniss - Hunger Games Facts

This weekend we'll see the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 in theaters, which is (for now) the last installment of this film series. Although fans will see how Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) finds peace in Panem, it's unlikely that Mockingjay will be the last movie in the Hunger Games film franchise.

Since the release of the first film in 2012, Lionsgate has made the Hunger Games a big priority, as the franchise took in billions of dollars for the movie studio. In fact, the Hunger Games is the biggest franchise Lionsgate has at the moment, so there are rumblings that the studio will eventually release more movies that further explore the characters and stories of Panem.

While speaking to Yahoo! Movies UK, director Francis Lawrence opened up about new Hunger Games movies after Mockingjay - Part Two hits theaters. He said he'd jump at the chance to make more movies, only if the new stories came from author Suzanne Collins, who wrote the books, in which the films are based. Francis Lawrence explained:

“We’ve finished the story and it’s kind of bittersweet for us. We all loved making the movies, we all loved being together, but I’m very happy to have seen the stories through to the end... So if there were ever more stories, I think they’d have to come from Suzanne Collins. She has to have a new idea and theme that she’s interested in and think up new stories to tell around the world of Panem.”

At the moment, Suzanne Collins has no plans to write more Hunger Games books, but that doesn't mean Lionsgate will not make any more films. If Mockingjay - Part Two is a box office hit, it's more than likely that we'll see more movies in theaters soon enough. But if there are any new spinoffs or prequels in the works, the main cast (Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson) will not return to the franchise. According to J.Law:

“Not with us in it. They’ll get a whole new cast of young hot teenagers [to star].”

Earlier this year, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer revealed that his studio is "actively looking at some development and thinking about prequel and sequel possibilities” to continue the Hunger Games. The world of Panem is so vast and deep that there can easily be more movies, namely there are 73 other Hunger Games tournaments that could be brought to life on the big screen. For example, there could be a film about how President Snow came to power and how the United States became Panem, among other things.

Considering that Lionsgate is planning to build a Hunger Games amusement park in Dubai, there's enough room in the franchise for more stories and characters. "May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor," might as well be Lionsgate's new mission statement.
