Just because we're only a couple days away from the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday movie rush, doesn't mean the Hollywood marketing machine is taking an early vacation. A healthy amount of promotional material and imagery from several upcoming releases has already been released this week.

Today's batch of goodies includes: a new image from Lionsgate's adaptation of The Hunger Games and several still frames from Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

The Hunger Games

For all you readers who are just tuning in, here is the lowdown on this young adult literary adaptation:

The Hunger Games revolves around Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a sixteen-year-old girl forced to enter the titular competition – a futuristic televised event in which a teenage boy-girl pair or "tributes" from each region of Panem (a futuristic dystopian version of the United States) are forced to battle one another to the death in an arena, as a means of illustrating the ruling government’s might.

Today's new Hunger Games pic details a moment between three important characters: Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), Katniss' fellow "tribute" from District 12 of Panem; Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), a former Hunger Games winner and the drunken mentor to Katniss and Peeta; and Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), a stylist who helps the teenage pair win favor with the viewing masses, in order to improve their chances of survival.

The recently-released Hunger Games trailer was largely a hit with devoted fans and newcomers alike; those who have already read Suzanne Collins' original literature tended to only have trivial criticisms about the footage shown (ex. Haymitch's hair). So, all things considered, Lionsgate must be doing something right with the film, if even the most scrutinizing of fans can find almost nothing of value to complain about (so far).

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Here is a synopsis for the fourth entry in the Mission: Impossible film series:

The Kremlin has been bombed, and the blame has fallen on the IMF. As a result, the president initiates Ghost Protocol, and accuses Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team of placing the bomb in an attempt to incite a global nuclear war. Now in order to clear the IMF of terrorism charges, Ethan assembles a new team to uncover the truth by using every high-tech trick in the book. But this time they’re on their own, and should they be caught, the entire world could be plunged into a nightmare from which there is no waking up.

Now check out several images from Ghost Protocol in the gallery below:

Ghost Protocol throws Cruise's Agent Hunt for more than a few wild loops, including a deadly foot chase right in the heart of a sandstorm (read our early footage description) and a terrifying climb along the exterior of the world's tallest building, with nothing but (flawed) cutting-edge technological gloves to hold him (see: this behind-the-scenes clip). Jeremy Renner's Agent Brandt may be positioned as a new action star in the film, but it's clearly going to be Cruise who has to do the really heavy lifting.

More importantly: the movie sounds like it'll be all the more fun to watch because of said crazy stunts and set pieces.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol begins a limited release in IMAX theaters around the U.S. on December 16th, 2011. It will commence with a regular wide theatrical release five days later on the 21st.

The Hunger Games arrives in U.S. theaters on March 23rd, 2012.
