[UPDATE: Check out the latest Hunger Games Poster!]
Fans of The Hunger Games novels will jump for joy with today's new image from the upcoming film adaptation by Seabiscuit director Gary Ross. The image shows our heroes Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) about to (literally) light up the opening ceremonies of the titular Hunger Games, thanks to some pyrotechnic costumes designed by their team stylist, Cinna (Lenny Kravitz).

For the unfamiliar: The Hunger Games takes place in a dystopian future in which a fascistic government city rules over 12 impoverished districts in the remnants of what was once America. After a failed rebellion by the districts, the capital created "The Hunger Games," a televised tournament in which a male and female teenager from each district fight to the death in a high-tech arena, as a reminder of the capital's might.
When District 12 teen Katniss Everdeen sees her younger sister picked for the games, she volunteers to take her place and finds herself side-by-side with baker's son Peeta Mellark, headed for the flamboyant futuristic metropolis of the capital city. There, Katniss and Peeta meet the team of coaches and stylists that will guide them through the games - including the enigmatic Cinna, a quiet and unassuming designer who just might be the biggest advantage Katniss and Peeta have.

It looks like Oscar-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (Seabiscuit, Harry Potter) has done a wonderful job bringing both the general aesthetic of Suzanne Collins' novels to life - as well as the looks and designs strategically plotted by Cinna to make his two subjects from the coal-mining District 12 stand out in the games.
The image is also a great tease, as fans will almost certainly feel the agony of this almost-but-not-quite look at Katniss and Peeta in their fire costumes - a moment that marks one of the first turning points for Katniss.
With this tease, and all the spare morsels offered by The Hunger Games trailer, Lionsgate is doing a good job building anticipation for the film amongst established fans and newcomers alike, while still managing not to give away the whole film.
The Hunger Games opens on March 23, 2012.
