What was the fate of Gwendoline Christie's Commander Lyme in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2? The Hunger Games franchise is based on the book series of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The story centers on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence, mother!), who is forced to take part in the annual Hunger Games ceremony, which is a televised death sport. After narrowly surviving in the first movie, Katniss becomes something of a symbol to rebels within the dystopian society of the franchise, and after being forced to take part in the games the next year, she decides to fight back.
Lawrence's appearance in both the X-Men franchise and The Hunger Games helped cement her stardom, and Katniss became one of her signature roles. The success of the series kicked off a short-lived wave of other dystopian YA adaptations, including The Maze Runner trilogy and The Divergent Series - which accidentally became a trilogy when the third movie underperformed and the studio scrapped the planned final movie. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 was still a financial success but proved to be the lowest-grossing of the series, proving the YA subgenre needed a little time to rest.
The Second Rebellion of Panem forms the bulk of the final two Hunger Games movies, with the oppressed fighting back against the brutal regime of President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland, Ad Astra). The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 introduced the character of Commander Lyme, played by Game Of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie; Lily Rabe was originally cast but had to bow out due to schedule conflicts.
Commander Lyme is a survivor of the Hunger Games herself and led the rebels in District 2 of Panem. Sadly, the character doesn't get much in the way of screentime and her fate is never directly addressed. She's not present in the movie's key voting scene, however, which features all the past victors of the Hunger Games, meaning Lyme was almost certainly killed during the battle of District 2. Given her practical nature, it's likely she would have voted in favor of Coin's (Julianne Moore) plan to hold a symbolic Hunger Games.
Suzanne Collins is currently working on a prequel Hunger Games novel that is set for publication in May 2020. This story will take place during the 10th Hunger Games, meaning an appearance by Katniss is very unlikely, considering its set six decades before the events of the original book. It almost feels inevitable the book will receive a movie version too, though the question remains if viewers will embrace The Hungers Games without Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss involved.
