While Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Hunger Games are very different stories when looking at things like setting, characters, and tone, they do have some similarities. They are both popular franchises aimed at young people, and they both deal with some pretty heavy and complex topics despite the young audience.

Because of this, it’s interesting to compare these two stories and imagine how characters from one world would be in the other world. While the cultural connections of the two worlds are very different, it is interesting to imagine what element The Hunger Games character would bend based on their personalities.

Rue: Earth

As someone from District 11, Rue was raised in an environment more connected with nature and agriculture than many of the more industrial districts. So, it makes sense to give her earth. It also works given her personality. While Rue is still very young when she dies, she is a very capable, practical, and caring person that matches well with the element of earth.

Effie Trinket: Air

All elements have different associated personality traits, and some of these are good while others are bad. Effie makes the most sense as an air bender because her personality is not very grounded. While she is also emotional which could make her seem like air or fire, she’s also someone who has a flighty streak and is a bit vapid which is something air signs in astrology are known for.

Cinna: Fire

Lenny Kravitz as Cinna

While Katniss might be known as the Girl on Fire, it was Cinna who made her that way. Fire often gets a bad reputation as being a more destructive or angry element, but this isn't the full picture. Cinna represents many of the best things about fire benders such as their passion, creativity, and intense energy. Cinna is an artist who understands the important things at stake, and he clearly knows the impact of fire.

Finnick: Water

This is an easy connection to make given that Finnick comes from District 4 which is known for fishing. This gives him his skills in the water and with the trident weapon. However, it’s not just where he’s from that makes Finnick most associated with water.

His personality on the outside might seem more like fire, but he is a deeply caring and loyal person who is more ruled by his deep emotions than he seems at first.

President Snow: Blood bending

President Snow from The Hunger Games

While there are four main elements in The Last Airbender, each of these elements has off-shoot bending skills that some people know how to use. Some of these things can be used for good, but there is one obvious type of bending that seems the evilest. Bloodbending is a type of water bending that is in direct conflict with water’s ability to heal. Given how cruel Snow is and how he wants to control everyone, he would have no issue with using blood bending.

Haymitch Abernathy: Air

Woody Harrelson

Haymitch might come from District 12 which is more associated with earth or metal bending given that it's known for mining, but it’s also important to look at the personalities of each character. Haymitch can be a bit flaky and flippant which are some less positive traits of the element of air, but he can also be extremely quick-witted and fast to act which are also air traits.

Primrose Everdeen: Healing

This is a pretty obvious connection given that Prim is a healer already in the world of The Hunger Games. She has a knack for this skill from a young age, and she quickly becomes a great healer even while she’s still a young teenager.

Because of this, she would definitely be a water bender who specializes in healing given her gentle, compassionate nature that hates to see others in pain.

Gale Hawthorne: Metal

Gale Hawthorne in Mockingjay.

Gale is a somewhat difficult person to place because he could either be a fire or earth bender. So, the element that makes the most sense for him to bend is metal. This branch-off type of earth bending is one that takes a lot of strength but that can also be used to do a lot of damage. Given how Gale ends up being too forceful with his approach to the war, this makes a lot of sense.

Peeta Mellark: Water

It’s easy to associate District 12 as a whole with earth bending, but Peeta, while he does have earth element traits, also has many water element traits. He’s compassionate, emotional, and kind, but he’s also extremely strong. Water is a very versatile element that isn’t to be underestimated, and Peeta is someone whose gentleness is what makes him so powerful.

Katniss Everdeen: Earth/Avatar

Katniss

Given her function in the story, Katniss would be the Avatar type character as she’s the one who ends up taking down a veil regime. Personality-wise, however, Katniss seems like a mix between either a fire bender or earth bender. However, given her stubborn nature and affinity with the wilderness, it would make the most sense that her original bending element would be earth.
