Warning: contains spoilers for Fantastic Four #35!

Two of the most memorable members of the Fantastic Four, the Human Torch and the Thing, have officially switched roles within the team. Known as "Marvel's First Family", every member of the Fantastic Four has a unique power and a unique personality and skillset. But in the super-sized Fantastic Four #35's featured story Death in Four Dimensions, written by Dan Slott with art by John Romita Jr. and colors by Marte Gracia and Erick Arciniega, Johnny Storm and Benjamin Grimm exchange the roles they've played since the beginning of the franchise - all thanks to Doctor Doom's wedding.

In the tumultuous last issue, Doctor Doom invited the Fantastic Four to Latveria to attend his wedding (he even asked Reed Richards to be his best man). The team believed that Doctor Doom was finally on the verge of turning over a new leaf - but on the altar, the bride confessed to sleeping with Johnny Storm. A furious Doom fought the Four and other guests in attendance (T'Challa and Namor among them), but eventually decided death was too good of a punishment for Johnny, and instead removed his ability to deactivate his power - forever condemning him to be "...a true Human Torch."

Reed Richards plans to find a way to revert Johnny to his human form, but until then, Johnny is constantly alight - and his flame burns incredibly hot, so much so that Susan Storm must constantly put a force field around her brother to prevent his surroundings from burning down. He begins to despair, but Ben Grimm stops him from lashing out at his sister. "Brother, more than anybody here, I know what yer goin' through," the Thing says. Johnny has been by Ben's side for years - and now Ben plans to return the favor.

For years if not decades, the Thing was a tragic character; as the only member of the Fantastic Four unable to change his appearance at will, Benjamin Grimm at times considered himself a monster. In multiple Fantastic Four stories, Reed Richards has attempted to "cure" the Thing, but these attempts almost always fail - either through Reed's imperfect methods, or because the Thing eventually decides he's better off as his orange, rocky self. For his part, Johnny Storm was the always-optimistic partner of the Thing; he'd make fun of Ben but ultimately supported him whenever he needed help.

As Fantastic Four #35 concludes, Johnny is still trapped in his Human Torch form with seemingly no way to revert to his original self. Johnny is still despondent - and the teaser image for Fantastic Four #36 hints that Storm has undergone a "...drastic, life-altering change" that will change how he'll interact with his family. But out of every member of the Fantastic Four, the Thing knows what it's like to be "locked in" to an inhuman form, and will help the Human Torch through his weakness that was once his own.
